How does KVPY Preparation help ace JEE?
KVPY serves as the base for appearing in JEE. Read the article to know more about both the examinations.
KVPY and JEE are two major examinations for all those who want to pursue engineering. These exams open doors for the best technology and research institutes in India. Aspirants often have questions as to which of these exams is more difficult or if giving KVPY would help in the preparation of JEE. Many also often wonder about the advantages of giving the KVPY examination.
Students must note that the preparation for KVPY and JEE can be intertwined as more or less both the examinations have the same syllabus. KVPY is like the foundation for JEE Main examination. To know how the KVPY would help in acing the national-level engineering entrance examination JEE, students need to understand and analyse the syllabi and exam patterns of both these examinations.

About KVPY
The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a national-level fellowship programme in the field of Basic Sciences, which is conducted every year by the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore every year. It is an objective test held for 3 streams- SA (Class 11 students), SX (Class 12 students) and SB (1st year UG students). Under the programme, all the eligible students are offered scholarships and contingency grants until the pre-PhD level.
KVPY examination is scheduled to be conducted on November 7, 2021.
About JEE
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a national-level entrance exam conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is a two-tier entrance examination— JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The examination is conducted to offer admissions to BE/BTech, BPlan and BArch courses at the IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology), NITs (National Institute of Technology) and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) across the country.
Only the top 2.5 lakh score holders in JEE Mains are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced examination for admission to various undergraduate engineering programmes offered by IITs in India.
Differences between KVPY and JEE
There are several differences between KVPY and JEE. Some of them are listed below:
Syllabus
The NTA releases the JEE Main Syllabus. For the preparation of JEE, students need to prepare from subjects including Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Likewise, for KVPY preparation, one needs to prepare from PCM as well as Biology. KVPY SX Syllabus 2020 consists of topics from classes 10, 11 and 12. For SB Stream, the KVPY Syllabus will also comprise topics from first-year undergraduation besides syllabus from classes 11 and 12. The question paper of KVPY is divided into 2 parts having 4 sub-sections (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics) each. Applicants must attempt 3 sub-sections in Part I and 2 sub-sections of Part II. It is advised to be thorough with NCERT books for KVPY, but for JEE, students must refer to other books for preparation.
Exam Pattern
There are several differences in the exam patterns of both the entrance examinations. For example, JEE is conducted in both online and offline mode whereas KVPY is held in the online mode only. JEE is conducted in 2 stages (Main and Advanced) both of which are written exams while the selection procedure of KVPY includes a written exam and an interview. However, this year, only the written aptitude test will be considered for the scholarship grant due to COVID-19.

Eligibility
Aspirants must have passed/appearing for the Class 12 final examinations from a recognised board to be eligible for JEE. Those who wish to be admitted in IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs must have secured the top 20 percentile of their respective board.
Students can appear for KVPY while studying in Class 11 (SA stream) provided they have secured 80% aggregate in Class 10. Candidates studying in Class 12 (SX stream) and the 1st year of Undergraduate course in basic sciences (SC stream) are also eligible for KVPY, provided they obtain the required aggregate.
Admission Scope
JEE is the most important prerequisite for admission into various government and private engineering colleges. It can open doors for admission into IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes.
KVPY is a gateway for admission into top research institutes. Aspirants who wish to pursue pure sciences can get into prestigious research colleges like IISc and IISER. Students who qualify JEE Advanced with a good rank can also get admission into IISER and IISc.
How will the preparation for KVPY help in JEE?
KVPY is the first competitive exam faced by Science stream students. So, KVPY preparation can help the students a lot in facing JEE. The scholarship exam can help applicants analyse their preparation level for JEE. It would also help them assess their time management skills, logical reasoning, among other things.
KVPY tests an individual’s ability to comprehend and apply various concepts. It is mainly used to determine if aspirants have an aptitude for research. Studying for the scholarship test requires a strong hold over the fundamental concepts. This serves well for the JEE preparation as students will have clear concepts while appearing for the engineering entrance examination.
Analysis: Which is tougher— JEE or KVPY?
KVPY is meant for testing an individual’s basic knowledge and research aptitude while JEE Main requires more bookish knowledge and formula application skills. It is observed that many candidates who fail to qualify KVPY exam clear the JEE Main with a good rank. The selection rate of KVPY is 1.8% only.
JEE Advanced is a lot harder than KVPY, as the exam pattern and level of competition of JEE Advanced are very different and difficult.
Summary
Although both KVPY and JEE Main have a different approach, they are modelled on the same syllabus. KVPY test-takers can finish the syllabus well within time for JEE Main which is held in four sessions (February, March, April and May sessions).
KVPY serves as a confidence booster and opens new opportunities to join research programs. Applicants have a greater chance of getting into IISc and IISERs through KVPY than JEE. The difficulty level of JEE is considered easier as compared to KVPY. It can help candidates to assess their strengths and weaknesses. It can also help in increasing their efficiency in such exams.
