Master of Science or MSc programme in Agriculture & Forestry, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics are a natural choice for science graduates in India. M.Sc programmes help students to widen their scope and develop expertise in a particular subject area of their choice. They are offered by almost all the degree colleges and universities in India.

Eligibility

Candidates who want to pursue Masters degree programmes in science should have completed three-years Bachelor degree programme in a related stream from a recognised university.

Some universities specify a cutoff or minimum marks that one should have in graduation to be eligible for the M.Sc programmes they offer. Others might ask applicants to appear for entrance exams or interviews or both to prove their competence and knowledge in the subject area they choose.

Integrated M.Sc programmes, which are for five years, can be pursued directly after 12th in related subjects.

Some of the top institutions in India that offer five-year integrated M.Sc programmes in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology to meritorious students include:

  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS),
  • Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISERs),
  • National Institute of Science, Education and Research (NISER), and
  • UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences.

Career Prospects

A two-year programme, an M.Sc programme can either be academic in nature for those who want to pursue teaching or research as a career, or may be application-based, for those who want to join an industry after completing the course.

While an academic M.Sc programme can lead to further studies or a doctoral-level science programme in related field worldwide, an applied science M.Sc programme is usually considered a terminal degree abroad.
