Jairam Ramesh’s Virtual Interaction ‘On The Journey Of Writing’ At SRMAP

November 29, 2021: Jairam Ramesh, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, launched another innovative programme titled ‘University Eminent Lecture Series’ at SRM University, AP. Ramesh took part in a lively debate titled ‘On the Journey of Writing.’ Ramesh discussed his writing process and ideas with the audience, which included academics, students, scholars, and attendees from all around the country. Others were inspired by his generosity in giving writing advice, creating writing principles, being diligent about writing, and persevering and being patient with the process.

Jairam Ramesh also discussed his new book, The Light of Asia: The Poem That Defined The Buddha, which he wrote during the lockdown. His daily habit of sticking to a word count or other type of goal has made it easier for him to do the work. This book is significantly different from its predecessors in nature, and it reflects the same upbeat attitude that is a characteristic of the author's identity.

When it comes to writing rejections, he advises that failure should never be perceived as a deterrent. He explained that his personal path began late in life, and that his writing takes through at least three revisions before being published. He emphasised that this occurs because writing is an iterative, rather than a linear, process, and that this is what makes it a process full of surprises. He also placed a strong emphasis on reading.

To be a great writer, one must first devote time in being an excellent reader. He also expressed his belief that this generation lacks writing discipline. Writing is not only about conveying one's point of view, but also about comprehending the psychology of the intended readers, therefore it's never simple to communicate with them until one understands the mass psyche.

Ramesh stated that universities should create a system that encourages students to read a body of work from subjects other than their own and to write a paper at the end of their reading. Engineering students, for example, must be aware of current events in economics and literature. Students studying literature should also be aware of what is going on in science. Students would benefit from this cross-fertilization because they would be exposed to different ways of thinking.

SRM – AP Organises University Research Advisory Council Meeting

November 8, 2021: SRM University, AP held its University Research Advisory Council Meeting. As Chairman of the Council, Dr V K Saraswat, Hon'ble Member, NITI AAYOG, presided over the meeting. Among the dignitaries present were Dr P Sathyanarayanan, President of SRM University-AP, Prof VS Rao, Vice-Chancellor of SRM University-AP, Prof D Narayana Rao, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of SRM University-AP, and Dr Vinayak Kalluri, Registrar-in-Charge.

Dr V K Saraswat complimented SRM University-AP on their extraordinary success as a university during the last two years in his keynote speech. As a young university, SRMAP has already established itself as a forward-thinking research university of the new era, with multiple awards to its name. "In terms of policy and practise, India is undergoing a pedagogical transition. The National Education Policy-2020 has wisely replaced the obsolete 1968 policy. It's heartening to learn that SRM University-AP is already following NEP-2020's recommendations. In terms of education and research, the NEP-2020 has created amazing possibilities and opportunities to make the best use of human and natural resources. NEP-2020 aims to make India self-sufficient as a country. As a result, NEP-2020 aims to generate job suppliers rather than job seekers.” Dr Saraswat said.

NEP 2021 opinions and recommendations are tailored to encourage creativity and innovation. Universities and educational institutions, which are at the heart of knowledge generation and transmission, have been entrusted with the task of grooming tomorrow's leaders. The focus in the twenty-first century should be on transdisciplinary translational research. The need for industry-academic collaboration is urgent. Dr Saraswat also proposed that SRM University-AP establish a Value Addition Center to boost translational research. The centre will strive to increase the interaction between industry and academia so that they may collaborate on product engineering and develop market-relevant goods. “In product engineering, upscaling and upskilling are critical. We should focus even more on connecting our curriculum to India's illustrious past. Our forefathers made incredible advances in science, medicine, astrology, astronomy, and other fields about which the rest of the world knows relatively little. Now is the moment to remember them and learn from them," Dr Saraswat concluded.

While addressing the issues in the education system, the group concluded that core areas could not be compromised. In order to undertake qualitative research, good students and teachers must be attracted. Higher education institutions require top-notch teaching and research facilities. Collaborations can be advantageous for networking and fostering high-quality outputs in the early years. The group argued that design schools should encourage qualitative research brainstorming. Teaching, research, industry-academia relations, and societal benefits should all be pillars of education in any institution. Teaching and research should be complementary. Undergrads are not provided enough exposure to practical knowledge of equipment, which is today's institution's problem. Students' critical thinking, as well as project-based learning, should be encouraged from the beginning of their undergraduate education.

SRM-AP Hosts 12th Edition Of Distinguished Lecture Series – Science, Engineering, Technology Synergy for Sustainable Growth

September 27, 2021: The popular University Distinguished Lecture Series' 12th edition focused on the important relationship between Science, Engineering, and Technology. Prof Indranil Manna well demonstrated the correlation between the streams and how scientists, engineers, and industry professionals can work together for optimal social advantages during his acclaimed talk, ‘Science-Engineering-Technology Synergy for Sustainable Growth.’

Prof Indranil Manna, a DST JC Bose fellow, is the Vice-Chancellor of BIT Mesra at the moment. In virtual mode, the event took place on September 24, 2021.

Prof Indranil Manna stated in his speech that India is no longer a poor country, but rather a powerful economic force with a $3 trillion economy. "We are currently regarded as one of the world's strongest nations, not because of our population or the number of young people in the country, but because we were the first to send a mission to Mars at the lowest cost, and we were also the first to successfully identify the presence of water on the moon's surface. Furthermore, we are one of the world's few nuclear-capable countries", Prof. Manna stated.

Science set out on a quest to discover the facts of nature. The driving force underlying Science is the inquiry, "Why?" Though science unravels nature and truth mostly by curiosity or need-driven actions, with the occasional result of big ground-breaking discoveries, technology is sometimes required to verify it. Engineering, on the other hand, is concerned with "How?" whereas Technology is concerned with "What?" Engineering is responsible for the creation of certain items and equipment based on specific designs and inventions. Technology, knowledge gained through the road of knowing "why" and "how" to know "what" sells, is, however, critically necessary for society. As a result, Prof Manna recommends SET, or Science+Engineering+Technology, as the best path forward for optimum societal advantages.

Prof. Manna defined innovation as "new ideas, fresh thoughts, and new imaginations manifested as a technique or approach. It is progressive, multidisciplinary, guided, and translational. Engineering or technological interventions help to mature innovation. Furthermore, sustainability is a multi-faceted word that refers to the ability to maintain a particular rate or level while avoiding resource depletion, energy disruption, and ecological disruption.

"Engineering and technology are critical components of long-term sustainability. Engineers aren't only technicians who handle basic manufacturing, maintenance, and testing. Engineering, on the other hand, uses scientific and logical concepts to produce viable answers to social objectives and obstacles. The translation of fundamental concepts to design, develop, construct, utilise, analyse, model, stimulate, and predict is at the heart of engineering", Prof. Manna went on to say more.

The Government of India's Technology Vision-2035 focuses on improving each Indian's quality of life. Science is tenacious in its pursuit of the truth, regardless of its importance or immediate application. It offers hints, if not answers, and goes as far as the imagination allows. Engineering is all about enabling and offering solutions based on scientific principles. Technology, which is founded on scientific discovery and engineering ideas and improvements, is the final mile for societal benefit.

India is a tremendous inventor and has made steady development in this area. India is ranked 48 (2020) in the Global Innovation Index (GII), making it into the top 50 for the first time. Prof. Manna feels India has the capability and potential to crack the top ten. "Let us ensure that Science, Engineering, and Technology in India complement and thrive together so that our society reaches the desired culture, growth, and prosperity as quickly as possible," Prof Manna said.

SRM University-AP Develops Sustainable Transparent ‘Biofilm’ To Replace Plastic Cuvettes

September 20, 2021: Dr Anil K Suresh, Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, and his team at SRM University, AP recently developed a see-through transparent (with 85 per cent above transmittance) bio template from fish scale wastes to replace the widespread use of environmentally unfriendly disposal plastic cuvettes for UV-Visible Spectroscopy measurements in the 350-900 nm spectrum. UV-Vis spectroscopy is a versatile analytical instrument that can be used to investigate the nature of a wide range of synthetic, biological, and clinical compounds for pharmaceutical and environmental purposes. The members of the team demonstrated realistic on-biotemplate analysis of a variety of analytes, including DNA, proteins, nanoparticles, organic dyes, bacteria, the BSA assay, and dye degradation.

According to Dr Anil, the large-scale development of the biotemplate can handle various challenges in conducting sustainable research; for example, it can produce a great demand for fish scales as a resource stratagem that would otherwise cause bad odor and disease propagation if thrown. Second, the use of non-biodegradable plastic cuvettes for routine analytics can be reduced, and third, unlike plastic cuvettes, which require a 500-fold analyte, our biotemplate allows for analysis at very low 10 microlitre volumes, allowing for the analysis of expensive, rare, and high-risk analytes. Dr Anil K Suresh has been given an Indian patent, which gives him ownership of the copyrights to this ground-breaking discovery. The Royal Society of Chemistry has approved this paper for publication in the distinguished Journal of "Green Chemistry."

In addition, the study team demonstrated the ease of large-scale production by producing 3000 bio templates at a low cost. Dr Anil stressed that this low-cost, plastic-free, use-and-throw biodegradable transparent biotemplate derived from food waste as a bioresource stratagem has enormous potential in routine scientific and pharma UV-Vis analytics, and he plans to introduce it to the scientific community as a sustainable science solution very soon.

Dr Anil Suresh concluded that this groundbreaking idea would not have been possible without his team's tireless efforts and the ongoing support of the university administration, which is also encouraging and willing to assist Dr Anil in launching his own company within the university.

SRM University-AP, Undergrad Physics Student Files Patent

June 19, 2021: Under the supervision of Dr Sabyasachi Mukhopadhyay, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, SRM University-AP, Sreelekha Bhuvaneswari, a BSc Physics final year student in Andhra Pradesh, filed a patent for her work titled ‘A fibre material with moisture retention capacity with thermal tolerance and a method for manufacture.’

The project aims to provide a process for designing a cotton cloth that can be used instead of air conditioners. The Saharan silver ants, who regulate their body temperatures in the blistering desert heat, were the inspiration for this fabric pattern, as were the cooling powers of clay. This study would greatly reduce the need for air conditioning and other cooling systems in hot environments, lowering power consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Sreelekha hopes that this research will bridge the socioeconomic difference between haves and have-nots in communities because this cloth is environmentally friendly, durable, and cost-effective.

"I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr Sabyasachi sir for his unwavering support and guidance. Several models failed, but he believed in the concept, which encouraged me to continue with the project. The University's facilities made the process go smoothly; once the proposal was submitted, the system was automated. I appreciate the people at SRM University-AP believing in my idea and assisting me with the formalities. I could not have completed the design without the resources provided at my university",  Bhuvaneswari stated.

Chairman-AICTE Elucidate The Changing Scenarios Of The Education Sector In The Post Covid Era

June 7, 2021: SRM University, Andhra Pradesh hosted the tenth edition of the University Distinguished Lecture (UDL) Series, which focused on a timely issue, ‘Higher Education in India in the Post-Covid-19 era.’ The Distinguished Lecture was given by Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and a special address was given by Satish Chandra, IAS, Special Chief Secretary, Higher Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Prof D Narayana Rao, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of SRM University-AP, provided context for the event in his welcome address, emphasising how the unprecedented Covid-19 crisis has resulted in the temporary closure of approximately 1,000 universities and 40,000 colleges across the country, severely disrupting teaching and learning processes as well as research activities. People had to adjust to the shift to ‘Learn From Anywhere (LFA)’ which happened overnight. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recognises the significance of maximising technology's benefits while also noting its hazards and perils. Online education calls for carefully designing and appropriately scaled studies to determine how the benefits of online/digital education can be reaped while addressing or mitigating the downsides. There is a need to establish a ‘Digital and online Wing’ in the Departments of Education in different states of the country.

In his Distinguished Lecture, Prof Anil Sahasrabudhe stated that the usage of technology in the educational environment began before Covid. Platforms like Swayam and the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) were created to deliver quality education to everyone over the internet. Digital education has a benefit that no one can deny: it eliminates the need for physical distance in education. Students can receive digital education from anywhere in the world if they have access to a computer and an internet connection.

In relation to the state of Andhra Pradesh, Satish Chandra emphasised the issues connected with online education. The pandemic has hit 3,000 colleges and 17 institutions in the Higher Education Sector, affecting 12 lakh students. The future of education, on the other hand, will provide a hybrid environment that includes both online and offline teaching-learning alternatives. He believes that learning management systems, online platforms, and devices such as desktops, laptops, and tablets will all become part of the new normal in the education sector. The Government of Andhra Pradesh seeks to assist economically disadvantaged students by providing low-cost gadgets through several scholarship programmes.

The top agricultural economist from India and abroad from the reputed institutions, i.e., Arizona State University, USA; Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Bangladesh; ICAR-NIAP; IFPRI South Asia Office Delhi; JNU, IIMA, IIMB, IGIDR Mumbai, Delhi School of Economics; Institute of Economic Growth; Symbiosis School of Economics, Pune; Central University of Punjab; Central University of Jammu; Sharda University, Noida; Amity University, Noida; PAU, Ludhiana; AN Sinha Institute of Social Sciences, Patna; Centre for Development Studies; Thrivanthapuram delivered lectures and participated in Panel Discussions in the two-day event.

Prof Vijay Paul Sharma, Chairman, Commission for Agriculture Costs and Prices (CACP), Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer Welfare, GoI, India, highlighted all facets of the agriculture industry to achieve sustainable growth in the first Keynote Address of the conference. He began with a shift in agriculture production from supply-driven to demand-driven, closing the yield gap between states, and then moved on to the appropriate level of government intervention to improve farmer welfare, labour shortages and mechanisation, technology, credit infrastructure, public investment, and climate change and variability.

Prof R S Desh Pande, a famous economist, stated that agriculture is at a standstill and that agriculture's long-term viability would be difficult. Commercialisation (cropping method) and greed, he said, are the two biggest enemies of sustainability. He stated that we are mostly receiving technology that is cost-increasing rather than cost-saving, which has resulted in a fall in the net income of farmers over the last two decades.

The event drew nearly 20 notable panellists and presenters, as well as more than 100 attendees. Dr Ananda Rao Suvvari, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, SRM University-AP, congratulated all of the speakers and panellists for their contributions to the success of the conclave.

SRM AP Predicts Of Waning Time Of Second Wave Of Covid – 19 Spread In The States

June 2, 2021: Prof. D Narayana Rao, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, SRM University – AP initiated a project to estimate the Covid – 19 End-Time in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and West Bengal. Dr Soumyajyoti Biswas of SRM University in Andhra Pradesh, along with four BTech students, Anvesh Reddy, Hanesh Koganti, Sai Krishna, and Suhas Reddy, conducted an innovative analysis to forecast the end of the second wave of Covid – 19 spread in these states. The study used the Susceptible – Infected – Recovered (SIR) model, which was based on information from the Covid – 19 afflicted persons and the number of recovered people, as well as data from state governments. The SRM Team used these data, as well as the SIR Model and Machine Learning methodologies. The following table shows the end-times for the propagation of Covid-19 in several states:

The End-Time is defined as the date on which the number of COVID-affected patients in a given state is decreased to 5% of the peak number of cases.

The model has also been validated using data from the states of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Delhi: Peak of 28,935 was on 20th April 2021 and 5% of the peak number is 1490 and is predicted to occur on 28th May with an error of - 2 days to + 2 days

Actuals: 26th May: 1491

               27th May: 1072

               28th May: 1141

Uttar Pradesh: Peak of 37,944 was n 24th April 2021 and 5% of the peak number is 1897 and is predicted to occur on 27th May with an error of -2 days to +3 days.

Actuals: 27th May: 3179

               28th May: 2276

               29th May: 2014

               30th May: 1864

“The validation of the end-times of the second wave of Covid-19 dissemination also boosts our confidence in the projections given for other states.” Said Professor Rao

In comparison to the other states of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, the second wave of Covid-19 continues to spread for longer periods and errors are high in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. These variables may be linked to the enormous crowds that have happened in the four states on multiple times.

These predictions, according to Prof Narayana Rao, could aid in evaluating the impact on the medium and small company sectors. It could aid in the planning of academic sessions, examinations, and other activities in the education sector. It could also aid in the planning of medical infrastructure for healthcare in various jurisdictions.

P Mohan Aditya, Student Of SRM University, AP Receives Copyright For Design Of Face Shield

May 31, 2021: P Mohan Aditya, an SRM University, Andhra Pradesh student, was given copyright for his invention of a biodegradable ‘Face Shield for Humans'.

P Mohan Aditya, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student from SRM University in Andhra Pradesh, took great advances toward designing the very helpful face shield constructed from bio-degradable chemicals when the Covid-19 outbreak ravaged the world. Because it was an upgraded version of the usual face shields, he termed it ‘Facial Shield 2.0’. The copyright was granted to him as a result of the novel features he introduced to it.

The face shield 2.0 protects the mucous membranes (nose, eyes, and mouth) and includes a transparent visor constructed of a thin layer of 175-micron reusable plastic and a highly durable three-ply corrugated cardboard headband. The bursting strength of the cardboard is 16kg/sq.cm, making it both strong and light. Because biodegradable materials were used, the price of the face shield was kept low at Rs 15. The face shield 2.0 is adjustable to fit all head sizes and is composed of firm elastic for a comfortable fit that won't hurt your head.

Aditya developed the transparent visor of the face shield with CAD software and used the CNC machine to make the rest of the headband. The CAD model was fed into the CNC machine, which then analysed and cut the cardboard and translucent sheet in accordance with the design.

On 09-08-2020, P Mohan Aditya applied for a copyright for another unique invention titled ‘construction block for bed’. The Covid 19 patients' construction block for bed is once again a unique work of manufacturing beds out of reused materials. In a previous team assignment, he and his team successfully built an electric bicycle using a 24V 250Watt DC motor and a 12V and 12Ah battery. Aditya aspires to be a successful engineer who contributes to the welfare of society through his ideas.

HOD Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department Receives APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial International Travel Award

May 24, 2020: Assistant Professor and HOD Electricals and Electronics Engineering at SRM University AP, Amaravati Dr Tousif Khan N was recently presented with APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial International Travel Award for his research work on ‘Laguerre Neural Network Driven Adaptive Control of DC-DC Step Down Converter’. The prestigious award was presented by the Automatic Control and Dynamic Optimization Society (ACDOS) chaired by Professor Ravi Gudi of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Dr Khan's research suggests a new approach for estimating the unknown and uncertain load function using a Laguerre Neural Network Estimation technique, followed by compensation in the adaptive backstep control unit. A comprehensive architecture and adaptable backstepping controller with asymptotic stability of the closed-loop were presented. In addition, detailed numerical simulations are carried out to test the proposed control mechanism, subjecting the converter to input voltage, reference voltage and load resistance perturbations. Further, testing of the proposed controller in the laboratory prototype with a TM320F240 DSP-based controller board is carried out to check the performance. The results analysis shows that the proposed DC-DC step-down converter methodology provides for faster transient output voltage tracking with a smooth and successful conductor current response over the wide range of operations.

He says, “Under the class of DC-DC converters, the dynamics of DC-DC step-down converter are nonlinear in nature and are largely influenced by both parametric and unanticipated external perturbations. In its closed-loop operation, obtaining a precise output voltage tracking besides satisfactorily inductor current response is a challenging control objective. Hence, in this regard, this article proposes a solution.”

He further adds, “The primary objective in DC-DC converters is to transfer the energy among different DC circuits functioning at a specific voltage and current levels. This process of energy transfer is performed by temporarily storing the energy from the input source in an operating mode, followed by releasing it in the other operational mode of the converter. Thus, one level of DC input voltage is converted to another level of average DC output voltage at the load end. Meanwhile, the converter being ideal is expected to consume no energy. Any consumption of energy in the converter interface amounts to direct power loss in the overall supply system. Typically, converters render high input-output conversion”

Dr Khan will also present his work at the International Federation for Automatic Control (IFAC) World Congress to be held in Germany from July 12-17, 2020.

Good infrastructure which justifies the fees but the campus area is small.

Placements: Although the college promises 100% placements, which is true to some extent, the seniors told me that the average package is very low (near 5–6 LPA) and the placements are getting harder to get. However, 50 LPA is the highest placement offered in the B.Tech course.

There is no value for high fees, it's like any other private college.

Placements: Most students got placed in mass. Recruiting companies like TCS and Infosys offered salary package of less than 5 LPA. The average salary package offered is around 6 LPA. Top companies do visit and offer good packages, but they rarely recruit more than 5 people at a time.
