3 features that make IMI Kolkata top choice of management students, says Anushri Bhattacharjee
IMI Kolkata - International Management Institute, located at the heart of the city, is a management college boasting of a beautiful campus, a strong faculty mix, 100 per cent placement record and some of the leading specialisations for the students to choose from. The institute gives a student ample of reason to take admission and create a successful career path.
Here are the top three features that make IMI, Kolkata, a top choice for management students:
IMI Campus Life
IMI Kolkata boasts of a beautiful and colourful campus, adorned by plants throughout. There is a separate Academic Block and Hostel Block. When you enter the campus you are greeted by the colourful Academic Block Building with beautiful rainbow panelling, which means different things to different people. Then there is the fountain area, where you will find students relaxing on a sunny winter afternoon or in the summer evenings.
The institute has a hostel facility availed by a large number of students, but there are a few who are day scholars. So, for a day scholar, the college starts at 9:15 am with an early morning class followed by a lunch break at 12:30 pm. The lunch is served in the mess located in the hostel area. But don’t be mistaken that the lunch break is just for having lunch. Life in a B-school is fast-paced and IMI is no different. Lunch Break also means a time for clubs to hold short meetings with its members, or for members to prepare for any event being conducted that day etc. Then classes resume at 1:30 pm and go on until 6:30 pm according to the respective schedules. During the day if there are any breaks in between classes, there are a variety of things for students to do – there is a fully-equipped gym for students to use, a pool room, a big common room with provision for table tennis and carom and then there are also Volley ball and badminton courts to keep the students actively entertained. For those who like peace and quiet over sports, there is a two-storeyed library which stocks books, magazines, newspapers, business journals to help students gain knowledge. After classes end, the students stay back either for completing projects or there are events planned by clubs and societies which the students attend.
IMI Kolkata Placements
If we go with the numbers, we can easily see how successful placements are, every year. Not only it is 100%, but also it is getting better with the packages and brand names every year. Some new companies are always there which means the college is not only maintaining its relations with the existing recruiters, but it is further exploring and trying for the best. The placement team along with the placement committee run by students look after everything related to placements. If you think IMI Kolkata just gives you opportunities to sit for company interviews, you are wrong. From the very beginning of the academic session, they make the students go through rigorous process of preparation led by corporate trainers coming to campus and teaching about how the interviews are to be
cracked. Mock aptitude sessions are also held. So technically when the placement season starts, it is no longer a thorn bed for students, they are already corporate-ready. The institute has witnessed participation from 23 first-time recruiters such as Amazon, Coffee Day Global, CCD and Kent RO among others, who offered coveted profiles within multiple domains.
After the summer internship – which is compulsory for the students, students come back and start their second-year specialisation classes and soon after the placement season starts. It is a rigorous and time-taking process, but with mentors and the student-driven placement committee, it’s never an issue.
IMI specialisations
The first year of PGDM covers the compulsory papers such as Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Economics, Strategy, Operations, Mathematics, IT, MIS (Management Information System), Research Methodologies and the second year is for specialisations. The specializations offered here are for Marketing, Finance, HR, IT & Operations areas. The subjects that are available for the academic year are offered to the students and by the majority consensus of the students; the subjects that are going to be taught are finally selected. Specialization courses are pretty different because they require a lot more professionalism. The in-depth lecture sessions, real-time problem solving, followed by a group project and presentation – that’s how courses go. IMI Kolkata is famous for the marketing specialisation. Maximum numbers of subjects are floated in this domain. But it also encourages students to build their career path as they want and like and guide them thorough. IT labs are well-equipped. This college offers Six Sigma, Business Forecasting, ERP, Data Mining, Data Analytics and similar subjects that offer learning of new software, which can cost you a lot, if you are taking a Certification Course.
Here in this institute the student mentors, faculty mentors are always encouraging students to learn more and more. Nevertheless, life itself is a road of learning – each day and each incident teaches us something. We should never turn our faces away from learning.
