An affidavit has been filed by the Council in response to a public interest litigation petition filed by former vice-chancellor of Anna University, E Balaguruawamy, and advocate Ramkumar Aditiyan.

All India Council for Technical Education, AICTE informed the Madras High Court that the Tamil Nadu government’s decision regarding the cancelation of the arrear exams for engineering students was not in accordance with its guidelines. According to the Council, the engineering degrees cannot be awarded to students who have not cleared their backlogs. An affidavit has been filed by the Council in response to a public interest litigation petition filed by former vice-chancellor of Anna University, E Balaguruawamy, and advocate Ramkumar Aditiyan. The Council, in the affidavit, clearly states, “The Government Order declaring all the students as passed without an assessment by way of examination is against the AICTE Act.”

While speaking to a reputed media portal, M Sundresan, AICTE’s south regional officer said, “The Council has not exempted students from appearing for examinations or allowed them to move to next year without being assessed by exams. A degree cannot be awarded to a student who has failed to clear arrears. This is not acceptable to the industry too.” Mr Sundresan also added that it is against the guidelines to pass all the students who have paid fees for arrear examination.

Considering the delays caused by the ongoing pandemic situation, Tamil Nadu government cancelled the arrear exams for all college students this year except for final year students. Meanhwile, the final year college students are asked to appear for the arrear examinations. In the petition filed by Balagurusamy he said that the government’s decision to cancel arrear exams and give marks to these students as per the established norms is illegal, arbitrary, discriminatory and against the principal (sic) of natural justice.

Meanwhile, 2 weeks back, AICTE Chairman Anil Saharasrabuddhe hinted that there would be no cancellation for TN Arrear Exams 2020 and the same would be conducted. Students must note that dates for the TN arrear exams would be released soon by AICTE.
