Coronavirus: NCL asks students to vacate hostels in 48 hours, shuts labs

On March 17, 2020, the CSIR- National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) asked its 200-odd researchers, interns and project assistants to vacate the hostel facility before March 19. The institute has also imposed restrictions on the entry of visitors to the laboratory.

In the view of the COVID-19/Coronavirus outbreak, two more research institutes (CSIR- National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM)) have imposed restriction on visitors with immediate effect. Earlier, the Indian Institute of Science, Education, and Research (IISER) imposed restrictions on the visitors to curb the spread of the COVID-19.

According to the official statement released by the institute, On March 17, 2020, the CSIR- National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) asked its 200-odd researchers, interns and project assistants to vacate the hostel facility before March 19. The institute has also imposed restrictions on the entry of visitors to the laboratory. The statement also stated that the scientist and research scholars must shut down their experiments and reactions by midnight of March 17.

Universities, colleges, research institutes, and other academic institutions are releasing advisories to prevent the spread of the COVID-19. Following the same, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) has also issued a precautionary restriction on visitor’s entry. In the official statement released by the IITM, the institute stated that restriction has been imposed on visitors till April 15, due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The arrangements of visits will be made after reviewing the situation.

Confirming the reports regarding the restriction, NCL authorities stated the regular meetings and official works in the laboratory will continue as usual, but group visits will be discouraged for the time being to curb the spread of coronavirus.

A similar ban on visitors to the campus was imposed by IISER, Pune, on March 14. The institute also advised students against venturing outside campus until it is extremely important.
