Amid this crisis, IIT-Delhi (Indian Institute of Technology) has come forward to support the people of the lower economic strata that depend on the campus community.
The novel coronavirus imposed a serious global crisis by severely threatening the health and economy of the world. World leaders, WHO (World Health Organisation), and governments are working hard to combat the spread of the pandemic COVID-19. Amid this crisis, IIT-Delhi (Indian Institute of Technology) has come forward to support the people of the lower economic strata that depend on the campus community. Considering it as their moral responsibility to focus on their own campus, the institution has decided to exhibit their ‘generosity and goodwill’ toward their dependents.
The IIT Delhi has formed an ‘IIT Delhi Benevolent Fund’ to receive voluntary contributions in a formal and transparent manner for meeting the needs of the people of the lower economic strata that depend on the campus community. The beneficiaries of this fund will include the informal service providers of the campus (including rickshaw pullers, night mess workers, press-walas, dhobis and kabari-walas), construction workers and other workers employed by contractors providing service to the institute (such as house-keeping, solid-waste management, and workers in campus commercial outlets), daily-wage and contractual employees of the mess under BHM, and other daily-wage and contractual group-4 level employees under security, estate and works, establishment, and research project staff under IRD.
Latest Update: The fund is formed keeping the three-month requirements of these people in mind. In less than a week, the institute managed to raise Rs 9.20 lakh. The institute had put the fund link online and that managed to attract more contributions. To ensure transparency, each contribution irrespective of the contribution is visible on the website. The amount is in addition to Rs 1.2 lakh collected by the students of IIT Delhi to pay off the expenses of rickshaw pullers in and around the campus until March 15.
