JNU will be conducting the exams for students who couldn't appear for the online exam once the university reopens.
A day after Human Resource Development Ministry decided that the final year exams in the universities will not be cancelled and will be conducted by September end this year, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar has announced that the varsity will hold exams for those students who were not able to take them online earlier. On Monday, the HRD Ministry announced that in view of the spike in coronavirus cases in the country, the final years which were schedules from July will now be conducted by September-end.
As per the revised guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC), students who will not be able to appear in final year exams in September will be provided with another chance and universities will be conducting special exams "as and when feasible".The HRD Ministry decision came after Ministry of Home Affairs gave its approval to conduct the exams as per the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) approved by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Kumar said that he welcomes these revised guidelines as they will provide an opportunity for the students to write the end semester exams either in pen and paper mode/ online mode/ blended (online + offline) mode following the suggested protocols and guidelines related to coronavirus pandemic.
"In JNU, in many schools, we have already conducted end semester examinations using online platforms. For those who do not have access to the internet, and are unable to write the examinations, we have decided to conduct the examinations when they come back to the university depending on the COVID-19 situation," he said in a statement.
The UGC has permitted the universities to conduct special examinations for those students who are unable to complete their end semester examinations by the end of September, he said.
"There couldn't have been a better practical solution. This will help millions of students in the Universities to complete their academic requirements so that they move on to the next session seamlessly. As universities, we are sensitive to the needs of the students and UGC has taken a step which is proactively supportive of the students," he said.
