Maharashtra Government has asked the authorities to form a committee to look into the implementation of the new NEP 2020.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has asked the authorities to form a committee of experts to discuss the implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. On July 29, the Union Cabinet had approved the NEP 2020 that envisions major reforms in the school and higher education systems. The new NEP 2020 has proposed to replace the existing National Policy on Education of 1986, which was last modified in 1992.

The Chief Minister said the NEP has several new concepts, for which the state government will have to amend the existing laws."The need of the hour is to have a discussion with researchers, education experts to discuss the policy, which has only been announced so far," a statement by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) quoted him as saying.

He further said that the state government has to check what all changes can be implemented and what laws can be amended. He also called for removing the lacuna in the education system by enabling 100 per cent online and offline education for students in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Chief Minister has asked officials to check with the Centre if the academic year can be shifted to January to December given the coronavirus situation in the country.

The NEP 2020 is aimed at paving the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems to make India a global knowledge superpower. The Uttar Pradesh Government has also earlier suggested forming a 17-member task force to formulate an action plan for implementing the new National Education Policy (NEP 2020).
