Principal Sri Devi, from DMBS - David Memorial Business School talks in-depth about the institute's pedagogy in an interview with Shiksha.com. She talks about the curriculum, the importance of industry readiness for students in today's world, placement training, certifications, and mandatory internships for all students. Since its inception, the institute has concentrated on adapting its techniques to meet industry needs and evolving trends in order to assist its students to stand out above other graduates.

Q: What are the three things that your institute is doing that will enable it to differentiate itself from the competition?

A: David Memorial Institution is located at the heart of the city with two Acres campuses, Tarnaka.

Finding a college with great campus experience at the centre of the city with Auditoriums, Yoga Halls, Football Ground and many more is rare.  Students who travel from different locations feel convenient as the college is surrounded by all metropolitan facilities.

We are unique, as we train students to be career-ready right after their graduation. We provide five certifications that run in parallel to academics and we make sure every student gets equal attention in placements.

Q: What are the top three initiatives undertaken by you that are helping your students become more industry-ready?

A: We start training to groom students to get industry-ready right from the first year.  In Other colleges, placements training starts in the third year. Training students from the first year will enable them to learn at a slow pace without stressing them.   Learning can be a fun process with a variety of activities. We work on personality development and presentation skills in the first year.  We train students on trending programmes such as Digital Marketing, Six Sigma and Entrepreneurship in the second year.

For BBA, we provide five National Certifications and 3-6 months of paid internship in Top class MNCs and all this within your three years of Degree. Apart from this, you will get trained in soft skills, guest lectures, leadership development programme, Entrepreneurship Development Programme with CAT/MAT and other MBA entrance exam training.

For BCom graduates, we offer five Certification training in our Corporate BCom which will be very helpful in getting Jobs as they are Industry Oriented such as Certificate in Life Skills Certificate in Capital Markets , Certificate in Digital Marketing, Certificate in Business and Entrepreneurship and Training on SME Finance.

Summer internships, certification programmes, Specialisation clubs and our Final paid internship with a corporate will enable them to learn practical concepts of management and make them ready for placements and future career options.

Q: What are the key attributes that a student should have in order to Qualify for your institution and perform well?

A: Students should successfully complete Class 12.  Every aspirant has to go through two Rounds of the admission process which include Personal Interview and a Scholarship test.

To perform well, one has to be persistent in terms of studies. Students must be dedicated and focused and must have the zeal to understand the concepts to the core.

Q: What according to you are the best degree options to pursue upon completion of Class 12 and graduation?

A: Our Integrated Corporate BBA is the best option after Class 12.  BBA provides excellent features such as five certifications, Industry visits, six months paid internship, placement programmes, academic events and cultural & sports activities.

After graduation, we offer a PGDM course.  This programme is equivalent to MBA and approved by AICTE.   This programme prepares the student for a great career in management. We offer dual specialisation and our teaching methodologies are outstanding and include Case studies, Roleplays, Forums, Research projects, Guest lecturers by MNC’s, Events with young CEO’s from across south India, paper presentations, industrial trips and Corporate social responsibility programmes.

Q: What are you doing to improve/drive better campus placements for your current students and alumni?

A: We conduct placement training programmes in the final year for six months. This programme includes all concepts such as specialisation subjects, Mock Interviews, a CV building programme and written tests training to improve and make the best out of every student.

Our campus provides Summer Internships in the second year and final Internships in the third year to gain experience for the best placement offers.

Q: What are the various extra-curricular activities that you facilitate apart from routine theory sessions?

A: David Memorial gives an amazing fun learning experience to students.  We have various student-run clubs. We select a President and a Vice-President every semester for each club.  Academic clubs to extracurriculars, we concentrate on each skill and talent.  Here student can share their skills and also learn from others. We invite guests from the corporate world for social events.  You will be surprised to know how many vast opportunities are created by these clubs.

We conduct Corporate Social Responsibility sessions every month.  Serving communities and spreading awareness is our main goal. Clean ‘n’ Green, Save Earth, Plastic is Our Enemy, Save water, Summer Hungama, Women and Child Protection and many more are our annual repetitive summits and events.   Students attending these events gain experience and appreciation certificates.

Sports club, every week and annual sports event are one the most fun experiences at our campus.  Annual cricket tournament is conducted within the campus. 

We celebrate festivals and international events. Christmas and new year's week is our annual festive season with games, sports, academic meets and many more. Students from different batches get together and organise activities.  Dussehra festival is celebrated with Dance and cultural activities.  This festive club celebrates Indian culture and helps to bring awareness of ancient India.

Q: What kind of jobs routinely come to campus? What would you say are the key recruitment trends for your college (observed over the past five years)?

A: We are tied up with over 300 companies that visit every year. MNC’s and other corporates visit us for placement. Recently we had 10 days placement season with over 18 companies (July 13 to July 23 2021). We had companies from Banking and Finance Industry, HR recruitment companies, FMGC, Call center, KPO visited.  Recent Offer letters and placements records are very available at campus for parents and visitors for a glance.

The highest package offered to BBA students was Rs 3.8 lakh while the minimum package was Rs 2.1 lakh. For PGDM, the highest package was recorded as Rs 5.5 lakh while the minimum package was Rs 2.8 lakh.
