According to the AISHE Report 2017-18, engineering is one of the top three disciplines with the highest number of enrollments. The report states, "Engineering & Technology is the third major stream with 40.19 lakh students enrolled. The share of male students enrolled in Engineering & Technology is 71.4 per cent whereas female enrolment is 28.6 per cent. Eligibility Criteria for IIT Courses
To be eligible for admissions to B.Tech and Dual degree programmes at IITs, candidates should secure passing marks in the qualifying examination. The authorities have waived off the requirement of obtaining at least 75 per cent marks in class 12 board exams for admission to IITs due to COVID-19. Admissions to the above courses at IITs is based on two engineering entrance exams and a joint counselling process.

For admissions to M.Tech programmes, candidates need to have qualified Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering ( GATE). Bachelor degree holders in Engineering and those who are in the final year of such programmes will be able to apply for GATE.

During JoSAA counselling, the IITs release round-wise and category-wise cut-offs for admissions to B.Tech and Dual Degree programmes. After appearing for JEE Advanced, the next step is to appear for JoSAA counselling. JoSAA refers to joint seat allocation for admissions to 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 23 Other-Government Funded Technical Institutes (Other-GFTIs).
