The knowledge related to the Chemistry subjects and chapters has undergone the changes during the past one decade. On this page, we have provided the name of updated Class 11 Chemistry Chapters along with direct links for chapter-wise solutions, overview of the subject, important topics and more.
What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the branch of natural science that deals with the study of the properties, composition, and structure of elements and compunds. Every matter or substance that we see, feel or touch or experience are studied in Chemistry. In chemistry, we study the compositions of matters, what are they made up, how they can change, and the energy they produce.
11 Chemistry NCERT is subdivided into three main parts which are as under:
- Physical Chemistry
- Inorganic Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
Physical chemistry: Physical chemistry deals with the study of macroscopic properties, atomic properties, and phenomena in chemical systems. The students also learn the rates of chemical reactions, the energy transfers that occur in reactions, and the physical structure of matters at the molecular level.
Inorganic chemistry: In Inorganic chemistry, the students study the substances that normally have little or no carbon, constitutes the discipline of inorganic chemistry. Generally, Inorganic chemicals are commonly found in rocks and minerals.
Organic chemistry: Organic chemistry is the study of chemicals that contain carbon with hydrogen. Carbon has numerous variety and extent of structures that results from the three-dimensional connections of its atoms. Carbon is one of the most abundant elements that is capable of forming a vast number of chemicals. In the living organism, most of the chemicals found are based on carbon.

Class 11 Chemistry Chapters Overview
Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry: This chapter deals with the basic entity of Chemistry. Students need to learn the Nature of matter, laws of chemical combination, Dalton's atomic theory: the concept of elements, atoms, and molecules.
Structure of Atom: In this chapter, the students learn the Discovery of Electron, Proton and Neutron, atomic number, isotopes and isobars. Thomson's model and its limitations. Rutherford's model and its limitations, Bohr's model and its limitations, the concept of shells and subshells, dual nature of matter and light, de Broglie's relationship, Heisenberg uncertainty principle, concept of orbitals, quantum numbers, shapes of s, p and d orbitals, rules for filling electrons in orbitals - Aufbau principle, Pauli's exclusion principle and Hund's rule, electronic configuration of atoms, stability of half-filled and completely filled orbitals.
Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties: In this chapter, the students learn the Significance of classification, a brief history of the development of the periodic table, modern periodic law and the present form of periodic table, periodic trends in properties of elements –atomic radii, ionic radii, inert gas radii, Ionization enthalpy, electron gain enthalpy, electronegativity, valency.
Chemical bonding class 11 and Molecular Structure: This chapter comes with knowledge on Valence electrons, ionic bond, covalent bond, bond parameters, Lewis structure, polar character of covalent bond, covalent character of ionic bond, valence bond theory, resonance, geometry of covalent molecules, VSEPR theory, concept of hybridization, involving s, p and d orbitals and shapes of some simple molecules, molecular orbital theory of homonuclear diatomic molecules(qualitative idea only), Hydrogen bond.
States of Matter: In this chapter, students will be taught about the three states of matter, Solid, Liquid, and Gases.
Thermodynamics: Thermodynamics is the study of heat and its properties, the law governing its flow, changes into other forms, and its classification. This chapter is very important from exam point of view.
Redox Reactions: Redox reactions are the study of the concept of oxidation and reduction, redox reactions, oxidation number, balancing redox reactions, in terms of loss and gain of electrons and change in oxidation number, applications of redox reactions chemical reactions that include the transfer of electrons between two reactants. In this chapter, students will learn about types of redox reactions and decomposition reactions.
Hydrogen: In this chapter, students learn about the properties and preparation of hydrogen with its uses in daily life.
The s and p-Block Elements: Students study S-block elements which are Alkali and Alkaline earth metals that are group 1 and 2 elements in the periodic table. In this chapter, students also learn about boron family, compounds of boron, uses of aluminum and boron, allotropes of carbon, the carbon family, and important compounds of silicon and carbon.
Organic Chemistry- Some Basic Principles & Techniques: This chapter provide knowledge to the students about the concepts of organic compounds, structural representation, isomerism, classification, nomenclature, purification of organic compounds, and quantitative analysis.
Hydrocarbons: This is a vital chapter from class 11 and the entrance exams' point of view. Hydrocarbon is an organic compound consisting of hydrogen and carbon. Hydrocarbons are found in crude oil, natural gas, and coal among others. Students learn about synthesis, preparation from alkyl halides, unsaturated hydrocarbons, and carboxylic acids and its physical and chemical properties.
Environmental Chemistry: This chapter will guide students to various concepts that are related to the environment like water pollution, soil pollution, atmospheric pollution, and reasons that causes these types of pollution. Students are also taught in this chapter about the use of pesticides to reduce soil pollution and strategies to control pollution like waste disposal.
