The repercussions of the 21-day lockdown are likely to affect the results of more than 18 lakh students who appeared for Gujarat Board exams this year. The lockdown was imposed by the country to fight the spread of coronavirus. The answer sheet evaluation has been deferred till April 14 on account of the lockdown. The result of the Gujarat Board Class 10 and 12 exams are supposed to be declared by the end of May or first week of June. According to Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) officials, delay in declaring results would rely on whether the lockdown would be extended beyond April 14.

To accelerate assessment and ensure results are on time, school teachers’ association has demanded to allow teachers to check answer sheets at home. However, Gujarat Board Chairman A J Shah refuted the possibility. He further added that the Board would wait until April 14 to take further decisions on evaluation. If the situation does not improve and lockdown prevails, it could be delayed further. If this takes place, the admission process for graduate courses that usually commences in July would be delayed too. The entire academic calendar would be affected because of this.

Apart from this, students enrolled in several universities raised a demand for mass promotion similar to class 1 to 9 and class 11. However, education department officials have asserted that no such proposal was being considered at the moment. Gujarat universities are deliberating online exams. An online exam for master’s degree students is also being contemplated.
