World Tourism Day at IIHM

March 22, 2024: The International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) staged a huge online celebration for World Tourism Day 2021. On September 27th, 2021, IIHM hosted several notable hospitality experts and celebrities from India and throughout the world. The day was especially memorable for te institute because it marked the official opening of the much-anticipated IIHM Global Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research. The UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikasvili, addressed IIHM on the occasion, saying, "We celebrate as the world cautiously reopens for travel. Now is the time to recognise our sector's critical role in achieving a vision of sustainable and equitable development. The theme of World Tourism Day 2021 is Tourism for Inclusive Growth. Reiterating the Secretary-General's ideas, Anita Mendiratta, Founder and President of Anita Mendiratta & Associates, London and Advisor to UNWTO Secretary-General said, "The global pandemic has forced us to focus on how to make a stronger touris community in future. There are four reasons for this. Travel and tourism are important to small and medium enterprises. In the pandemic, many businesses had to shut down because they could not survive. We also have the youth level, who have been forced to look for jobs in other sectors. IIHM and the education community need to re-inspire the youth to get them to realise that this is one of the most remarkable professions. We need to make the youth feel valued, protected, engaged, and supported. Then we talk about women. Eighty per cent of travel and tourism businesses are in the SME sector and 50 percent of those come through women's employment. Finally, we have to focus on environment. Sustainable tourism development must be environmental. We need to protect everything that Nature has given us."

IIHM has Pledged to Support the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

March 22, 2024: IIHM has pledged to support the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has adopted SDG Goal 2 of ZERO Hunger, where our students have reached out to as many people as possible, through the Food Aid initiative, where students who are 'Food Soldiers' distribute cooked food and food grains among the underprivileged across several cities in India. It is not enough to be hospitable in your profession; hospitality should become your fundamental character. The International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) educates students not only how to be hospitable to visitors and customers, but also how to be kind and compassionate to those in need. IIHM has made a significant contribution to the cause by demonstrating their responsibility to society and supporting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which were highlighted by the United Nations this year. On 15th August, 2019, students of IIHM across the country have expressed solidarity and visited, children's homes and old age homes where they distributed fruits and cooked food among the occupants.

IIHM has designated August 15, 2019 as 'Freedom from Hunger', which promotes the second goal of the UN Sustainable Development Initiative. "Being affiliated with the hospitality industry, we have opted to promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 4. The second goal is zero hunger, while the fourth is quality education. That is why we chose to commemorate Independence Day as 'Freedom from Hunger' day at IIHM and took the initiative to go out and provide food to those in need," stated Dr. Suborno Bose, IIHM's Chief Mentor. All IIHM campuses across India have joined the endeavour and are contributing in their respective cities. Students from IIHM Kolkata visited five old age and children's homes throughout the city to provide food and brighten the lives of those in need. Following the morning flag hoisting ceremony, the students were divided into groups to carry out the programme. Over 2,000 children and seniors received food prepared with care at the IIHM kitchen in Kolkata.

IIHM Delhi Launches Entrepreneurship Cell SAHAS; Issues 1 Crore for Budding Entrepreneurs

March 22, 2024: On June 15, 2020, IIHM and Dr. Suborno Bose, IIHM's Chairman and Chief Mentor, inaugurated SAHAS, a proactive entrepreneurship cell that encourages students to become future entrepreneurs rather than looking for jobs. Given the current economic climate and job market, this programme will serve as a support structure for its students as they launch hospitality enterprises. The first chapter of SAHAS, opened at IIHM Delhi, is a Rs 1 crore corpus fund. Dr. Bose designated his birthday, June 15th, as SAHAS Day, and awarded the corpus fund to his IIHM student community. Dr Bose said, "We will help any student who needs a seed capital from this fund that will be available from all IIHM campuses. They will also be guided on how to approach a venture capitalist for loans for their start-ups. Gradually this fund amount will increase in future.” SAHAS cells are available at all ten IIHM campuses across the country. The goal is to move students from job searchers to job producers. SAHAS' expert panel will discuss and guide IIHM students into entrepreneurship. "In addition to placing students in hotels, retail, and healthcare industries as the times change, we must aggressively push them to become entrepreneurs. I've seen many young people who want to be entrepreneurs and start their own businesses, but they lack sufficient direction and funding, and some of them believe that starting your own business costs a lot of money, which is a misconception.
