NMIMS School of Design Opens Admission to BDes Programme

December 05, 2022: At a time when creative talent, a love of technology, and a passion for business are fusing together to create user-friendly solutions that make people's daily lives simple, an undergraduate programme in design is quickly gaining significance. AICTE-approved 4-year undergraduate BDes programme at SVKM's NMIMS School of Design blends design, technology, and cognitive and behavioural sciences to efficiently meet commercial and social needs. With a focus on a user-centric approach to design education, it provides a transdisciplinary and holistic design curriculum with a human touch. The curriculum seeks to give students the knowledge and skill sets necessary to visualise 2D, 3D, and 5D experiences. The institution is ranked fifth among design schools in Maharashtra and eleventh overall in India by Careers360 in 2022.

The school's curriculum is dynamic and experiential, and in addition to knowledgeable industry people, classes are delivered by a highly skilled and trained staff. Students are urged to put up effort, show curiosity, and "learn by doing." This has led to a consistent flow of graduates who are not just artistic and creative but also have the capacity for strategic thought. Modern studios, workshops, and labs, such as the Tinkering lab, Rapid Prototyping lab, XR (Extended Reality), and a usability lab, are available at the SVKM's NMIMS School of Design for students to use. Additionally, the sector offers internships to students, giving them the chance to learn design principles in practise. This exposure opens up a number of doors and career prospects in a variety of industries, including consulting, hospitality, IT, banking, healthcare, education, and tourism. For the second consecutive year, the School of Design at NMIMS has a 100% placement rate, with students being hired by prestigious businesses. One of the new employers, Walmart Global Technology Services India Private Ltd, provided a package of Rs. 20, 27,100 for the position of Associate Designer.

NMIMS Design School Students Design Smart Gadget To Solve Water-Related Problems

March 24, 2022: A group of students from Mumbai's premier education institute, NMIMS deemed-to-be-university’s School of Design (SOD), has designed a water management system that can address the issue of equitable water distribution among Mumbai's slums dwellers while also ensuring the efficient resolution of BMC's water supply-related service needs. According to Prof. Manisha Phadke, Director of the NMIMS School of Design: "Our students' Smart Water Supply System, which is powered by new technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and is mobile-enabled, has the potential to transform the lives of Mumbai's 7 million slum dwellers, who struggle to get their fair share of clean and safe water on a daily basis. It can also assist the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in monitoring and tracking water delivery issues in real-time."

Palak Goyal, Hetavi Shah, and Aarushi Mehra, all fourth year students at NMIMS School of Design pursuing a BDes (Humanising Technology) programme, built the Smart Water System. As part of the Connected Experiences course, the Smart Water System was attempted as coursework. These students' innovation was chosen as a special mention in the ‘Service Design’ category for the CII Young Designers Awards 2021. The winner was chosen from a pool of 750 entries from around the world. This design curriculum provides students with a variety of employment options by merging Human-Centered Design with Emergent Technology, Cognitive and Behavioral Science to produce economic value.

The SMART system will address the water-related issues for Mumbaikars and BMC alike. As part of the scheme, all slum houses are registered and given a water card that is linked to the residents' cell phones. A display board is installed at the water source, where slum dwellers fill their buckets, to track and control the flow of water and to warn of water quality. By scanning their cards, each slum inhabitant can collect their daily allocation of 20 litres of water. To ensure equitable water distribution, each member is only permitted to scan their cards once per day. However, the SMART Water Supply system allows people to borrow additional "scans" from their neighbours or friends if they reach their daily quota and require additional water.

Furthermore, the card is linked to the systems of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), allowing municipal corporation authorities to monitor daily water consumption as well as receive and respond complaints about tainted water or the need for maintenance and repair work.

The BMC's daily water supply is insufficient for the approximately 7 million people who live in Mumbai's slum neighbourhoods, resulting in water-related scuffles and community conflicts on a regular basis. Currently, slum settlements receive only one-third of the available water, or approximately 45 litres per person per day, whereas non-slum residential families receive approximately 150 litres per person per day. Furthermore, BMC faces its own issues in addressing water-related service needs in these slums, and establishing a safe and effective water delivery system is one of the municipal corporation's largest concerns today.

SOD - Potential for Improvement.

Placements: A few of our seniors were placed at companies like Walmart and Deloitte with great top-paying packages. I haven't met most of my seniors due to both of us being busy with our own projects. The new batch is set to complete their capstone soon, and after they graduate, they will start looking for placements.
