Bharat Dynamics Ltd. (BDL), a defence public sector undertaking, has signed an MoU with Nocca Robotics, an incubated start-up of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) Kanpur to

manufacture large scale affordable ventilators.

With an aim to provide affordable ventilators for coronavirus treatment to the hospitals, Bharat Dynamics Ltd. (BDL), a defence public sector undertaking, has come forward to manufacture large scale ventilators which have been developed by Nocca Robotics, an incubated start-up of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-K) Kanpur.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between BDL, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kanpur’s incubator Foundation for Innovation and Research in Science and Technology (FIRST) and Nocca Robotics Private Limited (NRPL).

"To develop large scale affordable ventilators BDL is supporting IIT Kanpur's incubated start-up. With this joint effort, the aim is to scale up the production and make this critical device widely available as a ‘Make in India’ product," said Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur.

"In such a short span of time, the young engineers from IIT Kanpur have been able to achieve such big innovation. BDL has partnered with IIT Kanpur in manufacturing of these ventilators on a large scale. Together, we will give our best to serve the nation at this critical hour,” said Commodore Siddharth Mishra (retd), Chairman and Managing Director, BDL.

Nocca Robotics has designed and developed a high-end yet affordable, indigenous ventilator necessary for providing life support to critically ill coronavirus patients under the overall supervision of the IIT Kanpur team led by Professor Amitabha Bandyopadhyay.

Apart from providing support to the critical patient, the ventilator’s design also has unique features to safeguard the frontline healthcare workers from exposure to the virus.

These affordable ventilators have been developed by three young graduates of IIT Kanpur – Nikhil Kurele, Harshit Rathore and Tushar Agarwal.
