The National Institutional Framework Ranking (NIRF) has postponed the announcement of India Ranking 2020 amid the coronavirus lockdown until further notice.

Amid the ongoing lockdown due to coronavirus, the National Institutional Framework Ranking (NIRF) has postponed the announcement of India Ranking 2020 until further notice.

Normally, the NIRF rankings are announced in the first week of April, however, due to the current situation, it has been postponed. In 2019, the NIRF ranking was announced on April 8.

In 2019, it was the first time that the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) had announced Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA). It was announced based on the Budget and Funding support, Infrastructure and facilities, Awareness and Promotion of idea generation, Promotion and supporting Entrepreneurship, Intellectual Property Generation, Learning methods, and Governance.

The MHRD in 2015 had approved and launched NIRF. The first NIRF rankings were announced in 2016. The ranking was announced only in four categories - Universities, Engineering, Management, and Pharmacy. Later it increased to nine categories - Overall rankings, University, Engineering, College, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture, and Medical.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras was declared the best institute in NIRF 2019 ranking. In the same year, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore stayed at its spot for the best University.  Miranda House was declared the best college in the country. IIT Madras was awarded the best engineering institute along with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore being named as the best institute in the Management category.

Jamia Hamdard University Delhi was declared the best Pharmacy institute, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi was the best medical institute, National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru was the best law institute, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was named as the best institute in the Architecture category.
