The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has got the approval of the technical advisory committee of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM-TAC) for the installation of a supercomputing facility. As a part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), the installation of this supercomputing system at IIT Guwahati has been commenced. Together with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Department of Science and Technology (DST) is coordinating the mission. Apart from this, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) Pune are the implementing agencies of the mission.

According to Dr. T. G. Sitharam, Director of IIT Guwahati, a new supercomputer at IIT Guwahati with 650 TFLOPS was more powerful and technologically greater facility. This would play an important role in the domain of scientific and engineering applications such as oil and gas exploration, molecular modelling, weather forecasting, quantum mechanics, climate research, spacecraft aerodynamics, computational systems biology and detonation simulations including the supervision of large databases by means of Artificial Intelligence models.

In IIT Guwahati, C-DAC Pune will set up the supercomputing facility by means of the build tactic of NSM. This will offer requisite data centre space, power with back up, cooling, etc. for the facility. This new hybrid supercomputing system will not only enhance the HPC usages and research environment in the Institute but also nourish the research competence of the Northeast Region since around 40 per cent of the computing power will be sanctioned to the external users as per the guidelines approved by the NSM-TAC.
