This power plant will help them save Rs 60 lakh annually. To install the solar power plant, an estimated amount of Rs 6.5 crore was spent.

National Institute of Technology (NIT) Agartala set up a solar rooftop power plant to produce energy of one Megawatt (MW). This power plant will help them save Rs 60 lakh annually.  To install the solar power plant, an estimated amount of Rs 6.5 crore was spent. The power plant was commissioned by an Odisha-headquartered firm. Before this, Agartala was buying electricity from the Tripura State Electricity Corporation at a very high tariff. The installation of the solar power plant will help them save Rs 5 lakh per month.

Sanjay Dhotre, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development (MHRD), officially inaugurated the solar power plant, authorised by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The MHRD minister chaired a meeting with the directors of seven NITs in north-eastern states.

Apart from NIT Agartala, of late, many other universities have worked on the solar plant on their campus.

In August 2019, the Akal University Talwandi Sabo in Bhatinda has set up a solar plant on campus. The solar installment is likely to cover 80 per cent of the power demand of the university and 13 Akal academies in the region.

In February 2019, the Aligarh Muslim University had inaugurated a new on-grid solar system on the rooftops of its Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Sarojni Naidu Hall, S N Hall, Women’s Polytechnic, Bibi Fatima Hall, Department of Computer Engineering, New Hall for Girls, Senior Secondary School-Girls, Trauma Centre and Nadeem Tarin Hall.
