Petrol pump attendant’s daughter makes it to IIT, wins accolades on social media

The daughter of a petrol pump attendant, Arya Rajagoplan, has proved that she is no ordinary girl by securing admission to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.

Hailing from Annur, a suburb in Coimbatore, she completed her BTech from NIT Calicut and will now pursue MTech in Petrochemical Engineering at IIT Kanpur Arya’s father has been working as a customer petrol pump attendant at Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) for the past more than 15 years. The inspirational story of the father-daughter duo has gone viral on social media. It all began with the IOC chairman, Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, who posted a picture of the girl with her father at the petrol pump on Twitter highlighting Rajagopalan’s inspiring story.  

Not only this, the tweet also gained attention of Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who later congratulated the girl by sharing her heartwarming story on Twitter. He tweeted, “Heartwarming indeed. Arya Rajagopal has done her father Sh Rajagopal Ji & indeed all of us associated with the country’s energy sector immensely proud. This exemplary father-daughter duo are an inspiration & role models for Aspirational New India. My best wishes.
