Supreme Court has dismissed a petition filed by advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava seeking rescheduling of the JEE Main and National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET). The advocate filed the petition on behalf of 11 students from 11 states across the country. They were demanding to increase the number of exam centres as a precautionary measure for health and safety.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra including judges BR Gavai and Krishna Murari said, “Life has to go on and career of students cannot be put in danger. We find no merit in the petition. The petition is dismissed”
The petition against postponement said, “There is an imminent need to stick to the second revised schedule by the NTA. The admission process is time-bound and the entire admission schedule in a time regulated process. For medical admissions, there is a unique three-tier process involved, which must be done in a statutorily regulated time frame.
The petition seeking postponement said, "Conducting the aforesaid examination across India at such perilous time is nothing else but putting lives of lakhs of young students (including petitioners herein) at utmost risk and danger of disease and death. The best recourse at this stage can be to wait for some more time, let COVID-19 crisis subside and then only conduct these exams, in order to save the lives of the students and their parents."
