Mystory@Rishabh Bhatnagar: How I chose my course and college

Mystory@Rishabh Bhatnagar

My choice of subjects in Class 11 was absolutely unrelated to the course I selected in college. That’s because I was confused in my school time about what do in life. So, I took the safest set of subjects to keep my options open in future. I studied PCMB with Maths in Class 11 and 12 However, later on I left it all to pursue my passion i.e. Journalism.

One flier turned out to be the decider of my life.

On the day of English Board exam, when I walked out of my exam centre in Gurgaon, I saw that the road was chock-a-block with parents and cars. Amid the hustle-bustle there was a person standing at the gate handing out fliers of a coaching institute. I took that flier without paying any heed to what was written on it.

I read it when I reached home and that was the first time I was exposed to journalism as a course. The flier explained that the coaching institute offered prep help for journalism entrance exams. That very day, I took out my laptop to find out what the course actually was and which colleges are considered best for it. That flier turned out to be the decider of my life. Had it not been for it, I would have probably taken a drop year for not being able to figure out which course to choose.

How I cracked college admission

The admission procedure for Amity School of Communication isn’t tough and one doesn’t need to ‘crack’ it. Due to family reasons, I couldn’t take admission in colleges outside Delhi-NCR and since the number of colleges in Delhi University offering journalism for males is peculiarly less, it was out of question too. Moreover, the cut-off didn’t fall below 95% for boys that year. I had scored 81% so I couldn’t make the cut. Therefore, I chose Amity. The entire admission process was online wherein you can pick the slot/day you wish to appear for your personal interview for admission.

My college experience

The first 3 semesters in my college were quite hectic. The classes were scheduled for long hours and my engagement in extracurricular activities was less. Then my friends established a debate club and I started taking part in the activities with the club. I was also elected as the class representative in the third semester which put a lot of work on my plate.

My course has a lot of fun classes that vary from TV to print to advertising to radio. I volunteered for the TEDxAmityUinversity and took part in the AMIMUN. I love to take part in quizzes and debates as well. Many speaker sessions are also organized in which industry biggies share their experience and ideas. Beside these, various other fun and engaging activities are organized.
