Coronavirus outbreak: What is the status of IIM Admissions 2020?

Coronavirus outbreak has delayed IIM admissions 2020-2022 in multiple ways but the institutes have now begun to announce final result of MBA/PGP admission 2020. Check the status of WAT-GD-PI result of all IIMs, here.

The Government of India declared nationwide lockdown on March 24 due to coronavirus outbreak, which has brought the world to a standstill. Consequently, schools and colleges cancelled exams, classes and admission. The IIMs too had to halt their operations. The IIMs not only conduct semester exams and summer internship interviews, they also conduct the selection process for MBA admission in March, April and May. Since the nation is in a lockdown state until May 17, will IIM admissions be delayed?

Looking at the status of admission process at most of the IIMs, currently it seems that the classes for MBA batch 2020 are likely to be deferred by two weeks. Amit Karna, Associate Professor of Strategy and Chairperson Placements at IIM Ahmedabad told Business today that the IIMs are deferring the start of their academic session by a few weeks. "We are taking one step at a time. For now, two weeks should be ok," said Karna.

Top IIMs, like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta complete the WAT-PI process in March. IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode and IIM Amritsar conducted PI through video calls in April. Similarly, IIM Nagpur, IIM Udaipur and IIM Rohtak also plan to announce GD-PI result by May end.

Meanwhile, IIM Indore has scrapped Written Ability Test (WAT) as part of selection process for PGP batch 2020, due COVID-19 outbreak.

“COVID-19 impacted our admissions process in March 2020 and we decided to shift to the online mode for conducting interviews of the remaining candidates. Since conducting online Written Ability Test (WAT) was not possible for such candidates who appeared for the online interviews, the Admissions Committee after due deliberations and considerations, has decided to drop the WAT component and its weightage for all the candidates for the PGP and PGP-HRM admissions process of IIM Indore for 2020,” the IIM said in its official statement.

This will also be applicable for candidates whose in-person interviews have been conducted. The decision has been taken by the admission committee and the institute claims, “The current situation warrants this decision in order to maintain process transparency, fairness, and consistency,” it further said.
