IIM Sambalpur Director Praises Progressive Budget for Education, Emphasizes Self-Sufficiency in Innovation Despite Budget Cut for IIMs
The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have received a reduced budget allocation for the 2024-25 financial year, prompting concerns about funding constraints at these premier management institutions. Support from Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) has declined from ₹307.24 crore in 2023-24 to ₹212.21 crore in 2024-25, before seeing a slight rise to ₹251.80 crore in 2025-26.
However, Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director of IIM Sambalpur, has expressed a positive outlook, emphasizing that IIMs are not reliant on government funding for growth. “The IIMs are autonomous institutions, and we are more than capable of generating our own revenue through innovations,” Prof. Jaiswal stated.
He highlighted that the progressive 2024-25 budget includes several initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, such as the creation of 500 AI Centers and funding for Atal Tinkering Labs, which could benefit IIMs. He further explained, “IIMs don't need money from the government. We are not a school like engineering colleges; we are business schools, and we can create businesses through innovations, case writing, consulting, and more. We also have the freedom to charge higher fees, as we are not bound by government controls.”
The director also noted that the autonomy granted to IIMs by Prime Minister Modi is instrumental in allowing them to innovate freely, especially in areas like AI integration. “We don’t need approval from the Ministry, only from our board, which makes it possible to implement new ideas quickly,” he added.
While the budget allocation to IIMs has been reduced, Prof. Jaiswal sees the autonomy and innovation-driven approach as key to the institutions’ continued success, underlining that funding is not the primary challenge for IIMs.
As the government continues to prioritize education, particularly through initiatives that support SMEs and innovation, IIMs are expected to thrive by leveraging their autonomy and ability to generate funds through innovative ventures.
