Q:   What is considered a good attempt in the TANCET exam?

A:
According to the previous year's trends, you need to score above the 90 percentile to get into top colleges. According to the seat allotment rank and scores, here is the list of colleges with their required scores: 1. PSG College of Technology: 94.95 2. University of Madras, Chennai: 95.76 3. Thiagarajar School of Management, Madurai: 95.76 4. Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering: 96.87 5. In comparison with the CAT difficulty level, TANCET is considered easy to crack. This is because the total number of test takers is less if compared to CAT exam, additionally, the difficulty level of the questions asked is easier than the CAT exam.

Revision: The strategy to ace the Quantitative Aptitude section is to revise all the important topics in TANCET syllabus from time to time. Without regular practice, aspirants will lose out on the learning and the ability to solve questions within the stipulated time. Hence, it is important to revise through regular time-bound practice sessions.

Don’t overlook your weak links: The only way to score well in the QA section of TANCET 2024 is to build a base on all topics of the QA syllabus. There is still some time left for the exam and aspirants can refer to online exam portals to sort out their queries in their weak areas or they can take help of a mentor or teacher with expertise over these areas. Also, while improving their weak points, candidates should relentlessly work to build on their strengths.

Q:   Is the syllabus for CAT and TANCET same? Can I prepare for TANCET exam using CAT study material such as mock tests and question papers?

A:

CAT is a national level exam for MBA admission, while TANCET is a state level exam for MBA admission. Syllabus for both CAT and TANCET are on a similar lies with slight changes in the sections. TANCET exam includes an additional section for Business Situation analysis. Candidates who have prepared for CAT exams section, including DILR, VARC, and QA, need a minimal study plan to prepare for TANCET. Candidates who took the CAT exam must drive deeper into the section for analysis of business situations. Study material, including books, question type remains similar for CAT and TANCET exam.

Practising mock tests for CAT and TANCET must be done individual as the difficult standards, exam duration, number of questions and other elements of test pattern will vary. Mock test will provide a better understanding of taking TANCET and CAT exam.

Q:   Which section of the TANCET exam has the highest weightage?

A:

The TANCET exam has five sections, namely,

  1. Business Situations
  2. Reading Comprehension
  3. Quantitative Ability
  4. Data Sufficiency
  5. English Usage

As per the TANCET exam pattern, a total of 100 questions are asked collectively from all sections of the TANCET exam. All five section of TANCET MBA exam have equal weightage. Therefore, candidates have to answer a total of 20 questions, irrespective of the section. Since all sections of the TANCET exam have equal weightage, candidates must take all sections seriously. Each section of TANCET exam holds identical importance.

Q:   Can you suggest some preparation strategies for TANCET MBA? How much do I need to score to join Madras University?

A:
Some tips one should consider: Prepare all the topics listed in the syllabus. In case a topic gets left out, candidates will risk their chances of obtaining a high score. Avoid picking a new topic. Candidates must also select appropriate study material as it will help them understand the structure of entrance test. Avoid any kind of guesswork. Negative marking is applicable in the exam and it is better to leave those questions whose answers candidates are unable to determine with conviction. Take as many mock tests as possible before the actual day of the test. Mock tests help candidates identify their strong and weak areas. Mocks give them the chance to strengthen those weak areas. Prepare a schedule which must be followed religiously. By the time the exam day arrives, candidates will become skilled at allotting equal time to each section of the test. Vocabulary is an integral part of any entrance test these days and candidates are advised to strengthen it as much as they can. It is advised that they read as many newspapers as they can daily and mark down words they have unknown so far and then check for their meaning.

Q:   How can I perform well in English section of TANCET exam?

A:

TANCET exam's English Proficiency section is further divided into two sub-sections. These sub-sections include Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability followed by General English which evaluates the grammatical skills of the candidate. Candidates should develop a habit of reading newspapers, magazines and books to have a better understanding of English Knowledge. They can also refer to High School Grammar by Wren and Martin for developing a strong foundation. Basic Grammar forms the base of this examination and a candidate should be good in basic grammar such as Articles, Parts of Speech, Tense, etc. A candidate needs to read the basic grammar books and can also learn the rules of grammar online by practicing more. Following areas require candidate's attention to score well in the TANCET English section:

  • Vocabulary
  • Synonyms and Antonyms
  • One word Substitutions
  • Idioms and Phrases
  • Spotting Errors

Balance accuracy with speed: For success in TANCET, the accuracy and the speed with which a candidate solves the question paper should go hand in hand. One who will succeed in striking a perfect balance between these two factors will surely excel in TANCET exam. Even though there is no negative marking scheme, test-takers should not compromise on the accuracy to increase the attempts, because even If they do not lose marks for wrong attempts, they will end up losing time.

Time Management: Aspirants should improve their time management strategy. While the sections are not time-bound, it is not recommended to spend ample amount of time in one section. For each question, candidates should not spend more than four to five minutes. Hence, candidates should build on mental calculation ability and speed by memorising tables, square roots, formulae and other shortcut steps to arrive at the answer in a shorter duration. Since calculators are not allowed inside the exam hall of TANCET, it would be futile to practice with  the aid of a calculator and being dependent on it.
