NEET 2020: SC dismisses plea demanding postponement of exam date
Postponement of NEET 2020 exam date will put the ‘career of students in peril’, says SC while dismissing the plea filed by 11 students of 11 states.
The Supreme Court of India has dismissed the plea which demanded cancellation or postponement of NEET 2020 exam date. The plea cited that conducting NEET 2020 during an ongoing pandemic will put the lives of all those who appear for the examination at risk. Furthermore, the petitioners also urged that the number of NEET 2020 exam centres be increased such that every district could have a test centre.
The apex court dismissed the plea on Monday, August 17, stating that postponement of NEET 2020 exam date will put the ‘career of students in peril’. The court says that the submission by the Solicitor General regarding the precautions that will be taken on the exam date are satisfactory, therefore, eliminating the need for interference with the decision of the policymakers.
The plea, which was filed by Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava on behalf of 11 students on August 6, demanded that the exam date for NEET 2020 be postponed until the threat of COVID-19 subsides. The petitioners urged that the examination should be conducted only after normalcy is restored in the country.
While dismissing this plea, the court said “Life should move on even in COVID-19 times. Can we just stop exams? We should move on”. The court also emphasised on the fact that any further delay in conducting the examination will not only be a loss for the students but for the country at large.
After the decision of the apex court, it is clear that NEET 2020 will be conducted on September 13. Candidates appearing for the examination will be able to download their NEET 2020 admit card from August 29.
