These are first-hand student accounts on how our young population is managing to keep their exam prep or college course work going from the confines of their homes. In case you want to share your lockdown study experience, write to us at publish@shiksha.com.

During this lockdown situation, like all colleges under MAKAUT University, our college (BCDA College of Pharmacy and Technology) is also conducting online classes regularly through Google Classroom. The decision of taking online classes is very useful for the students. These online classes are very effective to cover the syllabus on time. The teachers of our college take online classes of their respective subjects regularly (Monday to Friday) as scheduled.

Every teacher takes many online classes to cover various topics and the students have to attend these classes regularly because, after the completion of the class, the students need to submit a report of online classes which they have attended. The teachers conduct online tests on various topics and assignment is given regularly. Through these online classes and tests, I think the syllabus would be completed on time. According to me, there is no other way to complete the syllabus in this lockdown situation than taking online classes and tests.

If I talk about labs and practical work, till now there is no notice from the university for the same.

Let’s discuss a little about what mortar/brick and online classes. The major difference in the experience of attending an online class and a brick and mortar class is that in an offline class the students can meet and talk with each other which are not possible in an online class. Also, the issue of the smooth network is faced by many students.

So, in my opinion, normal classes are more enjoyable than online classes. I would opt for offline classes if a choice is ever given to me.

Advantages of offline classes

  1. In an offline class, students are present physically. So, the class is more interactive.
  2. There is a less chance of cheating during the exam.

Disadvantages of offline classes

  1. The students have to go to college to attend the classes which takes a lot of time

Advantages of online classes

  1. Students can attend the classes from anywhere.

Disadvantages of online classes

  1. There is a high chance of cheating during the exam.
  2. The offline class is less interactive.

The current admission scenario in our college:

Due to this current lockdown situation, the Government of West Bengal has decided to shut down all the schools and colleges till June 10, 2020. So, the admission process is also postponed until June. There is no updated news about the admission process into colleges till now from the Government of West Bengal.

Long-term impacts of this new online scenario in the field of education

The online classroom is the need of the hour. The colleges (even traditional ones) have been forced to adapt and adopt online methods of instructions.
