TN to add 1,650 MBBS seats in 11 new medical colleges
If all the 11 new government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu get National Medical Council's (NMC) recognition, the state is all set to add more 1,650 MBBS seats, which will take the total tally to nearly 5,200.
As per the reports, NMC officials conducted surprise inspections at Namakkal, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur, and Dindigul medical colleges in the past ten days and more surprise visits are expected in the seven remaining medical colleges.
NMC team visits the newly constructed medical colleges to inspect the Biochemistry, Physiology, and Anatomy laboratories. The team also inspects the number of trained doctors, general wards, professors and teachers and the hostel facilities for girls and boys. Before giving the license, the NMC team will also inspect the attached hospital along with the patient flow. Most of these colleges will have 700 to 750 beds.
State Health Minister, Ma Subramanian, said NMC inspections in four of the eleven new medical colleges are already completed.
Once the 11 new medical colleges get clearance, TN will have a medical college in each district of the state.
Dr Nayarayana Babu, Director, Medical Education, Tamil Nadu said, "With the sanctioning of the 11 new medical colleges, other than the increase in the number of seats, the tertiary medical care will also improve giving a big boost to the general health of the state's people."
