Amid the declining cases of the novel coronavirus, the Assam government has decided to reopen schools and resume physical teaching-learning for students. The state has already reopened colleges, universities for partially vaccinated students. Assam Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu on September 16, 2021 announced that the cabinet has decided to reopen schools for Class 10 students from September 20. The minister further added that the government will issue an SOP, similar to the one released for Class 12 and others soon. Considering the health and safety of the students, classes will begin with not more than 30 students in a classroom. Schools have also received directions to follow other COVID-19 protocols.
The minister has asked the schools to begin preparations for reopening. It has been directed that if the number of students in Class 10 in a school is above 30, they will be divided into sections. Other precautions such as sanitisation, cleaning work, etc. will begin from today in schools.
The minister also asked students in other classes to be prepared for offline classes. Decision on reopening of schools for other classes will be taken after reviewing the situation for a week or ten days, after resuming physical Classes for Class 10.
Following the pandemic situation, the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) has reduced the Class 9 and Class 10 syllabus by 40 per cent for the ongoing academic year, Dr Pegu informed.
After months of closure following COVID-19 protocols, the state reopened schools and junior colleges for Class 12 and higher educational institutions on September 1. Institutes also received directions from the government to organise vaccination drives for eligible students for the first three days and resume Classes from September 6.
