BIS, IIT Roorkee tie up to establish ‘BIS Standardisation Chair Professor’

The agreement will facilitate research and development, teaching and training in the field of standardisation and conformity assessment with a focus on the areas of civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical and earthquake engineering. 

Government agency Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee for setting up of 'BIS Standardisation Chair Professor' at the institute. This will be the first standardisation chair established by BIS in an institute for activities on standardisation and conformity assessment. 

The agreement will facilitate research and development, teaching and training in the field of standardisation and conformity assessment with a focus on the areas of civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, earthquake engineering, renewable energy projects, medical biotechnology and nanotechnology, biotechnology, biomaterials, etc. 

The partnership will not only help in sensitising students on how standards can encourage and facilitate innovation, but it will also prepare them for future challenges, a statement issued by the institute said. BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari assured commitment to provide all necessary support towards the initiative.  

Supercomputer ‘PARAM Ganga’ installed at IIT Roorkee 

Recently, a supercomputer "PARAM Ganga" with a supercomputing capacity of 1.66 PFLOPS ((Peta Floating-Point Operations Per Second) was deployed at IIT Roorkee under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) to accelerate research and development in multidisciplinary domains of science and engineering. The facility will provide computational power to the user community of IIT Roorkee and neighbouring academic institutions.
