Taking another step towards improving the status of the Marathi language in the state, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation or BMC has directed all schools to put their names in Marathi. The notice released by the education department is applicable to both private as well as government schools. All schools falling under the jurisdiction of the municipality are now required to display school names in the language on large signboards in front of the school. Schools have to display the names in “Devanagari script on signboards of 8×3 feet size with viability outside school.”
Order applicable for both private and government schools
The Corporation sent the letter for the same to the Education Department on March 24, 2022. Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Aditya Thackeray and Varun Sardesai, Secretary, Yuvasena submitted the letter, seeking the same. The letter was submitted to Rajesh Kankal and Raju Tadvi of the BMC Education Department.

No recognition grant for schools not following order
The same would be followed up for proper implementation, Sainath Durge, a member of the BMC Education Committee and the Yuvasena core committee said while commenting on the matter. The Corporation also stated that schools failing to follow the order would not be granted recognition under Form 2 of the Right to Education Act 2009 (RTE), he further warned.
