Starting from the 2026-27 academic session, students will have the option to choose between Standard and Advanced levels for Science and Social Science. This initiative is designed to cater to students' aptitude and learning needs, allowing them to select a level that best suits their abilities.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to implement a two-level structure for Science and Social Science in Classes 9 and 10, similar to the system introduced for Class 10 Mathematics. The proposal was discussed during a recent CBSE curriculum committee meeting and awaits final approval from the Board's governing body.
Aiming for Flexibility and Student-Centered Learning
Starting from the 2026-27 academic session, students will have the option to choose between Standard and Advanced levels for Science and Social Science. This initiative is designed to cater to students' aptitude and learning needs, allowing them to select a level that best suits their abilities.
Development of the Dual-Level Framework
The framework for this new structure is currently under development. It is yet to be decided whether students opting for the Advanced level will have separate study materials or only experience differences in the examination pattern.
NCERT's Role in Textbook and Curriculum Development
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) will play a crucial role in the development of textbooks and curricula for the new system. NCERT has already released updated textbooks for Classes 1, 2, 3, and 6 as part of aligning with the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). Textbooks for other classes are expected to be available by early 2025.
Aligning with NEP 2020 Goals
This shift is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to reduce student stress and discourage over-reliance on coaching by offering subjects at multiple levels of difficulty. The two-level structure is part of CBSE’s commitment to a flexible, student-centered education system that encourages a more inclusive learning environment.
Approval Pending from CBSE Governing Body
Although consultations have been conducted, the final approval from the CBSE governing body is still pending. The key challenge remains ensuring that the necessary textbook and curriculum updates are made to accommodate this system.
This initiative represents a significant step in enhancing the educational framework and offering more adaptive opportunities for students.
