The clarification by NIOS came following the launch of the Delhi Virtual Model School by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal which he claimed was "India's first such platform".

National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) through an official statement said that The first virtual school in the country was launched last year by the Centre and not by the Delhi government. “On August 14, 2021, the Virtual Open School of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was launched by Hon’ble Education Minister,” the Board said.

“It is based on and empowered by Blended Learning with the integration of state-of-the-art technologies. The Virtual School caters to children wanting to appear in classes X and XII and covers the studies of 9-12.  211394 Learners of NIOS have been certified since launch of Virtual Open School,” NIOS added.

"With reference to certain media reports regarding the claims of India's first virtual school being launched today. It is informed that the first virtual school in the country was already launched by Union Education Minister in August last year," the NIOS said.

The clarification by NIOS came following the launch of the Delhi Virtual Model School by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal which he claimed was "India's first such platform". He also announced that students from across the country will be eligible for admission.

"At present there are more than 7000 study centres affiliated with NIOS which are dedicatedly to providing academic support and more than 1500 study centres providing support in skill-based vocational courses to the learners of NIOS Virtual Open School. Live interactive classes shall be conducted by these study centres accredited by NIOS," the open school said.

“To support Virtual School as well as other NIOS students, Digital Library was launched on 8th March 2022 on International Women’s Day by the Hon'ble Minister of State for Education, Government of India, Annapurna Devi, with more than 12,000 e-resources. NIOS has pioneered in providing Digital Library through Virtual Open School to make use of Digital Education & e-Resource Platform,” the statement reads.
