In a significant move aimed at ensuring the health, dignity, and academic success of female students during Class X and XII Board exams, the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, Government of India, has unveiled several proactive steps.
Recognizing Challenges Faced by Female Students
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the challenges encountered by female students due to limited access to sanitary products and menstrual hygiene facilities during exams were acknowledged.
Advisory to Educational Institutions
Responding to these concerns, the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) issued an advisory to all states, Union Territories (UTs), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), as reported by ANI.
Ensuring Menstrual Hygiene Management
"Menstrual hygiene management is a significant aspect of a girl's overall well-being and should not hinder her academic performance. DoSEL prioritizes menstrual hygiene management in schools to support female students during 10th and 12th board examinations," emphasized the ministry.
Key Steps Implemented
The Ministry of Education outlined key steps to address these concerns, including:
- Availability of Sanitary Products: Provision of free sanitary pads at Class X and XII Board exam centers for female students.
- Restroom Breaks: Female students will be permitted to take necessary restroom breaks to address their menstrual needs.
- Educational Programmes: Implementation of educational programmes to raise awareness among students, teachers, and staff members, aimed at reducing the stigma surrounding menstruation.
Empowering Female Students
The DoSEL emphasized the importance of treating female students with respect regarding their menstrual needs, fostering an environment where they feel empowered and supported during their exams.
The proactive measures undertaken by the Ministry of Education reflect a commitment to promoting gender equality and ensuring the well-being of female students in the education system. By addressing menstrual hygiene concerns, these initiatives aim to create a conducive environment for academic success and holistic development.
