The NCERT Expert Committee has recommended replacing โIndiaโ with 'Bharat' in all school textbooks. The panel has also recommended introducing 'classical history' instead of 'ancient history' in school textbooks.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) formed in August this year has suggested several changes in the school curriculum and syllabus and has also unanimously accepted the proposal to change the name of India to Bharat in all NCERT textbooks.
Once changes are implemented, students will be taught the word Bharat instead of India in school books. As per reports, India will be renamed Bharat in the next set of NCERT books.
This proposal to change India to Bharat was made a few months ago and has now been accepted. The committee has also recommended highlighting "Hindu Victories" in textbooks.
NCERT panel also recommends introducing 'classical history' instead of 'ancient history' in school textbooks, as currently it is divided into ancient, medieval and modern.
In August 2023, NCERT formed a 19-member committee, which included Sudha Murthy, Shankar Mahadevan, and Sanjeev Sanyal, to finalize the curriculum and textbooks for classes 3 to 12.
The committee was assigned the task to align the curriculum with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) developed by the K Kasturirangan-led steering committee as a part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
