Jharkhand, Chandigarh, and Patna Announce School Closures and Adjusted Timings Amid Cold Weather.
School Winter Vacation Extended: The winter season has brought an unexpected extension of vacation for students across several states in India as cold waves grip the country. The Jharkhand government announced on Saturday that schools will remain closed from January 7 to January 13, 2025, for students from Kindergarten to Class 8 due to the ongoing cold wave in the region.
Jharkhand Government Extends School Winter Vacation
In an official notification released by the School Education and Literacy Department, the state government confirmed that all categories of schools—including government, aided, minority, and private institutions—would remain closed for students up to Class 8. The suspension of classes is due to the severe cold wave conditions prevailing in Jharkhand.
According to the notification, schools will remain open for senior students in grades 9 to 12, who will attend classes as usual. The department highlighted that the decision aims to ensure the safety and well-being of younger students during extreme weather conditions.
Chandigarh Revises School Timings Due to Cold Weather
As the cold wave continues to affect northern India, the Chandigarh Administration has also taken steps to address the weather conditions in the region. The local government announced changes to the school schedule, applying to both government and private schools recognized by the Union Territory.
For students up to Class 8, physical classes will be suspended, but online learning will continue from 9 am onwards. Meanwhile, for Classes 9 to 12, physical classes will be delayed and will begin at 9:30 am, concluding by 3:30 pm. The revised timings are aimed at reducing students' exposure to the cold during early morning hours.
Additionally, schools conducting pre-board examinations have been permitted to open by 9 am. Timings for the school staff can be adjusted according to the updated schedule.
Patna School Closures Extended Due to Severe Cold Wave
In Bihar’s capital, Patna, schools have been shut for students up to Class 8 as the cold wave lingers over the region. Patna’s District Magistrate, Chandra Shekhar Singh, issued an order announcing that schools in the district will remain closed until January 11. The decision comes in light of the ongoing cold conditions that are affecting daily activities across the state.
In addition to school closures, all outdoor activities in Patna’s schools have been prohibited before 9 am and after 4 pm to ensure student safety. Classes for higher-grade students (from Class 9 onward) will continue as scheduled from 9 am to 3:30 pm.
Impact of the Cold Wave on Education in India
As the cold wave continues to affect large parts of India, several other states are also expected to revise their school schedules and vacation plans in the coming days. The safety and health of students remain a top priority for state governments as they manage school operations during adverse weather conditions.
Parents and guardians are advised to stay updated on the latest notifications from local educational departments and adjust their children's routines accordingly.
