As Kerala grapples with relentless monsoon rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for July 15 in Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, forecasting over 20 cm of rainfall in just 24 hours. An orange alert has also been declared for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, anticipating 11 to 20 cm of rain. In response to the severe weather, educational institutions in these regions will remain closed on Monday.
The heavy rainfall has already caused widespread damage, including partial destruction of homes and minor landslides. In Kasaragod, tourism activities have been suspended due to safety concerns. The situation is exacerbated by an active weather system affecting neighboring Karnataka, where similar alerts have led to school closures across multiple taluks, including Karwar and Sirsi.
Uttara Kannada district reported the highest rainfall on Sunday, with Castle Rock receiving an astonishing 220 mm. Authorities expect continued rain until July 16, prompting the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre to issue advisories for potential flooding.
In Goa, the Education Department has also declared a holiday for all schools up to Class 12 on Monday, following three days of heavy rain that resulted in a red alert. Pernem recorded 210 mm of rainfall, classifying it as "extremely heavy."
With the IMD's forecasts indicating further rainfall, officials across affected states are closely monitoring reservoir levels to prevent downstream flooding and manage water levels efficiently.
