With this expansion, the free breakfast initiative will support a total of 21.87 lakh students in Classes 1 to 5, covering both government and state-aided primary schools.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has launched the expanded Breakfast Scheme for government-aided schools, now benefitting 223,536 primary school students across 3,995 schools in the state. The inauguration took place at St. Anne's School in Tiruvallur district.

Widespread Impact on Students

With this expansion, the free breakfast initiative will support a total of 21.87 lakh students in Classes 1 to 5, covering both government and state-aided primary schools. This move is aimed at ensuring that children receive nutritious meals to promote their well-being and educational attendance.

Monitoring Student Welfare

Stalin took to social media to share his enthusiasm for the scheme, stating that he actively monitors the number of students being served through the CM dashboard. "I feel satisfied that the hunger of our students is being addressed!" he expressed in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Previous Expansion and Positive Outcomes

Last August, the Tamil Nadu government extended the breakfast scheme to state-run primary schools, benefiting around 18.50 lakh students in over 31,000 government schools across urban and rural areas. The initiative has reportedly led to a 10-30% increase in attendance among primary school students.

Launch and Objectives of the Scheme

The breakfast scheme was initially launched on September 15, 2022, providing free meals to 1.14 lakh students in 1,545 government primary schools. The key objectives are to prevent hunger, combat nutritional deficiencies, enhance nutrient intake, and alleviate the burden on working women by ensuring that children receive essential meals during school hours.
