The Education Minister of Tamil Nadu, Anbil Mahesh, said that a panel will be formed to check the increase in dropouts for Tamil Nadu 12th board exam 2023.
Anbil Mahesh, the Education Minister of Tamil Nadu, chaired a meeting on Thursday, March 17, 2023 to figure out the reasons for the rising number of students who fail to appear for their board exams. 5.6 per cent of students who are eligible to write the TN 12th board exam were absent for the board exams. Tamil Nadu Class 12th Exams 2023 began on March 13, 2023. It was reported that around 50k students were absent for the TN 12th board exam on March 13, 2023. Students who were absent for the Tamil Nadu Class 12 board Exams 2023 will have to appear for instant exams in June 2023.
Concerns about the rising number of student dropouts will be addressed by a committee, according to Tamil Nadu's Education Minister Anbil Mahesh. “We normally conduct such meetings with the chief education officers (CEOs) after the board exams. But this year, we are having to hold the meetings while the exams are underway,” he said.
“A consultative meeting was held with the District Principal Education Officers through video presentation today at the Chief Secretariat Namakkal Kavijnar Maligai,” Anbil Mahesh tweeted. “We discussed the attendance record of the student in the public examination and the functioning of the school management committees.”
He told the media that as many as 2,000-3,000 students from Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Dindigul districts dropped out of the exam this year. “Once the exam concludes, we will sit down and address this issue. We gathered some information from the officers on why the students might have dropped out of the boards this year and will form a committee to resolve the problem,” he added.
The education minister also added that this issue was seen throughout the year during the exams and authorities had not only reached out to parents but also provided counselling to the concerned students. However, the issue remains unresolved as candidates continue to drop out of the exams.
In addition, the Tamil Nadu government has also started a training programme focused on the emotional well-being and mental health of students. “As many as 1,15,000 students have benefitted from it (training programme) and considering the response and feedback to the initiative, we have now decided to extend it to all the districts in the coming years,” the minister added.
