The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that it has decided to restore the recognition for open and distance learning (ODL) courses offered by Calicut University's School of Distance Education (SDE).
After the approval from UGC, M K Jayaraj, Vice-Chancellor, Calicut University said that the first semester admissions for undergraduate and postgraduate will be completed by December. The courses that have been approved by UGC are, BA in History, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Philosophy, English, Malayalam, Hindi, Arabic, Sanskrit, and Afzal-ul-Ulema, BBA and BCom and MA in Economics, Sociology, Politics, Philosophy, English, Malayalam, Hindi, History, Sanskrit, and Arabic and MCom.
He further added that the approval has been granted for all courses except two. The UGC had raised doubts if MSc Mathematics and BSc Mathematics courses were being offered for the past seven years and kept their approval pending. He added that the courses were more than seven years old, and the University will file an appeal with the UGC in the next 30 days.
It must be noted that Calicut University did not have approval from UGC for ODL courses for the last two years. Calicut University is the largest university in the state in terms of number of students enrolled for distance learning courses with around 1.5 lakh seeking admissions every year. Students were offered a private registration facility on the condition that once the recognition is restored, they will be migrated to the ODL courses. They, however, too did not have UGC approval and students were concerned.
