India's first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, took his last breath on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, after a military helicopter carrying the General along with his wife Madhulika Rawat and twelve others crashed in Tamil Nadu's Coonoor.

India's first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, took his last breath on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, after a military helicopter carrying the General along with his wife Madhulika Rawat and twelve others crashed in Tamil Nadu's Coonoor. The crash killed 13 people on board. CDS Rawat's wife, traveling with him, was also killed. The whole nation wept in grief as the news of the crash emerged. Informing about the heart-wrenching accident, the Indian Air Force (IAF) wrote on Twitter, “With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, MrsMadhulika Rawat, and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident.”

The Air Force also informed that Group Captain Varun Singh with injuries is currently under treatment at a military hospital in Wellington. Group Captain Varun Singh came out as the sole survivor of the crash. Earlier, the Air Force confirmed that a Russian-made Mi-17 V5 helicopter with CDS Rawat onboard had "met with an accident near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu".  It has also been informed by the IAF that it had ordered an inquiry into what happened.
