Civil Engineering prof takes over as interim Director of IIT Gandhinagar

Prof Amit Prashant, Civil Engineering, IIT Gandhinagar, will take over the charge of officiating director of the institute from today.  

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar bade adieu to its founding director Prof Sudhir K Jain, who has recently been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi.

Prof Amit Prashant, Civil Engineering, IIT Gandhinagar, will take over the charge of officiating director of the institute from today. 

Jain said, “It’s overwhelming for me, but I am sure that the institute is in great hands. IITGN will continue to scale newer heights with fresh ideas, opportunities and collaborations. There is a great future here. I am grateful to all for being with me during these 12 years and for all the affection and support.” 

Jain took charge as BHU Vice-Chancellor in November 2021. He joined IIT Gandhinagar as the founding director in 2019. He was recently awarded the prestigious Padma Shri for distinguished service in the field of science and technology. He has also made major contribution to earthquake engineering practice and education in India. 

IIT Gandhinagar is a second-generation IIT that was established in 2008. It offers various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses across engineering, sciences, humanities and social sciences streams. The institute saw a 60 per cent jump in pre-placement offers (PPOs) in 2021 compared to 2020. The acceptance rate has increased by 30 per cent. Compared to 2020, the institute has seen an increase of 55 per cent in number of students placed in 2021.
