The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is now accepting applications for its MA in Society and Culture for the 2025 academic year, starting in July. Candidates can fill out the IITGN application form for MA in Society and Culture till January 15, 2025. Those who have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline are eligible to apply through the following link: admissions.iitgn.ac.in/pgadmission/login.
The programme offers students a wide range of research experiences, including fieldwork and ethnographic studies, visits to historical and archaeological sites in Gujarat, and travel across the country through the IIT Gandhinagar Explorer Fellowships. Students also have opportunities for undergraduate teaching assistantships (UG TA), as well as access to national and international academic and industrial internships, among other enriching experiences.
The MA in Society and Culture at IIT Gandhinagar is an interdisciplinary programme that prepares students for diverse roles across multiple fields. Graduates of the programme can pursue a wide range of career opportunities and research avenues, including:
- Roles in non-profits (NGOs, policy think tanks), journalism, advertising/media, communications, writing, and human resources
- Academic positions in teaching or research, particularly in ecological sciences and public policy
- Opportunities for international Ph.D. studies.
Highlighting the unique qualities of the programme, Prof. Jaison Manjaly, Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Gandhinagar, said, “The potential of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills is enormous in our times that lead us to new ways of thinking and finding a solution to a problem. IITGN has designed all of its courses to be flexible and interdisciplinary in nature to enrich and expand a student’s learning experience. The MA in Society and Culture helps students cultivate diverse perspectives on social and cultural factors and understand the intersections between disciplines for a nuanced view of their context.”
Prof. Jaison Manjaly, who is also the Principal Investigator of Curiosity Lab at IIT Gandhinagar, added, “The M.A. in Society and Culture programme provides exposure to key disciplines within the Humanities and Social Sciences, such as anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, development studies, economics, history, indigenous studies, philosophy, literature, translation studies.”
IITGN offers generous financial support and an ‘On-Campus Employment Opportunities’ programme for its students. The institute also encourages MA (Society and Culture) students to present their research at national and international conferences, providing travel scholarships of up to INR 60,000.

Candidates preparing for IITs are only required to appear for the JEE Advanced entrance exam after qualifying JEE Main. Students who who secure above the 98th percentile in JEE Main 2024 Session 2 should start preparing for JEE Advanced 2025 immediately. Those who score between 95th and 98th percentile should focus on improving their JEE Main score by taking multiple mock tests and practicing previous year's question papers. By analysing their strengths and weaknesses, candidates can identify their areas of proficiency and topics where they need improvement. If they can achieve full marks in their practice sessions, they can start preparing for JEE Advanced. However, if they cannot score full marks, it is recommended that they appear for multiple mock test series for more practice.

Candidates seeking admission to IIT Gandhinagar for the MSc programme must meet the basic eligibility for the course which is a UG degree in any stream. IIT Gandhinagar admission process is entirely based on the selection of candidates via popular entrance exams such as JEE Advanced and GATE, etc., for courses such as BTech and MTech, respectively.
