Coimbatore: IIT Madras to analyse Tiruchy Road flyover design

The district administration has decided that experts from the structural engineering department of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras will analyse the design of the Tiruchy Road flyover to find out the reason behind many accidents. The IIT Madras team will find out if there are any flaws with the design and if corrections are needed, they will provide the solutions accordingly.

"The national highways wing of state highways department which constructed the flyover is currently studying the design to identify any structural flaw. Meanwhile, through the Superintendent Engineer of the department, we have requested IIT's expert view," said district collector GS Sameeran, as reported by Indian Express.

The background

Many recurrent accidents at the flyover have raised the doubts about the design and effectiveness of preventive measures. After accidents, police said that there are structural problems and highway officials say that police are not controlling speed efficiently. After the third accident, minister V Senthil Balaji inspected the bridge and said the design has flaws. Hence to find out the real cause of these recurring accidents and solve this issue a district-level committee was formed.

The flyover is 3.15 km in distance and is built at a cost of INR 253 crores. On June 11, it was unveiled by Chief Minister MK Stalin and the next day, a fatal accident took place. On June 24, another person died on the flyover and again on July 14, one more fatal accident happened.
