The university's first-year exams for non-professional degree programmes like arts, commerce, and science are currently held at the college level on an experimental basis, which represents a substantial change from the conventions and rules in place. The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has announced that it has decided to form two committees to take a decision on first and second-year of examination at the college level. The non-professional bachelor programmes' first- and second-year exams will be scheduled at the college level in accordance with the academic calendar in institutions affiliated with the SPPU. On Wednesday morning, a meeting was held to talk about the situation. It was agreed that the college level planning would be used for all aspects of the written exams, including the question and answer sheets and mark checking.

The university's decision comes at a critical time because the pandemic has delayed the academic year by five months. The committees, led by doctors Manohar Chaskar and Vijay Khare, were established to investigate the situation and offer suggestions. The university will get the suggestions from the two panels, and in the examination board meeting, it will formally decide on them. It is hoped that moving the exam process to the college level will lessen the workload on the SPPU's examination and evaluation department, which has been experiencing a staffing shortfall.
Rahul Sasane, a PhD student and member of the University Students Sangharsh Committee, said that the decision will benefit thousands of students and ensure that results are announced in accordance with the academic calendar. Members of various student organisations have expressed their satisfaction and joy at the university's decision. Similar views were echoed by Sachin Pandule, president of Yuvak Kranti Dal, who also expressed his support and gratitude for the SPPU's choice.
Dr Mahesh Kakade, director of the board of examinations and evaluation, SPPU, "expressed his approval and reiterated that the committees will be provided with the current status of the exams." He further stated that "it would be appropriate to decentralize the examination process and hand over the first and second-year examinations to the colleges if the academic year is to start on August 1 and the results are to be declared on time."
