The government of India will issue a INR 175 coin, to mark 175 years of the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee. The Ministry of Finance made the announcement, however, the official notification did not mention any date for the release of the commemorative coin.

As per the official notification released by the Ministry, the coin will be made with a composition of silver (50 per cent ), copper (40 per cent), nickel (5 per cent) and zinc (5 per cent). On one side, the coin will have the James Thomason Building, the main administrative building of the institute engraved on it. While the upper periphery of the coin will have "Bharatiya Praudyogikee Sansthaan" written in Devanagari, the lower periphery will have its English translation "Indian Institute of Technology".

The other side of the coin will have India's national emblem -- Lion Capital of Ashoka -- in the middle and "? 175" written on the lower periphery.

"We are delighted that the Government of India accepted our proposal, and accordingly issued a gazette notification for a special commemorative coin of Rs 175 denomination," said AK Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, as reported by TOI.

The institute was established as the first engineering college of the British Empire in 1847. Back then, it was known as Roorkee College. Later, in 1854, its name was changed to Thomason College of Civil Engineering. After independence, the institute was elevated as the first engineering university of free India, and in 2001, the central government turned it into an IIT. At present, the country has 23 IITs offering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
