This makes a college eligible for central assistance from the Government of India or any organisation receiving funds from the Centre.
University Grants Commission (UGC) on Wednesday, i.e. September 23, 2020, declared that Gondwana University in Gadchiroli district is fit to receive central funds. According to the reports, the Minister of Higher and Technical Education Uday Samant said that the 12B status will help the university progress speedily. UGC provides financial assistance to eligible colleges that are declared fit to receive central assistance (UGC grant) under Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 as per the approved pattern of assistance under various schemes. This makes a college eligible for central assistance from the Government of India or any organisation receiving funds from the Centre.
Established in 2011, Gondwana University sent a proposal to the UGC, which has now been accepted by the commission. An official statement released by Samant stated, “The university will receive grant from the Rashtriya Ucchhatar Shiksha Abhiyan (a scheme by the central government to elevate the status of higher education). Affiliated colleges will also receive grants under different schemes run by RUSA."
Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission in its latest official notification has asked the Higher Education Institutions to submit proposals in order to offer online and distance learning courses from January 2021. According to the reports, the Open and Distance Learning Programme and Online Programs Regulations, 2020 were introduced by the UGC on September 4, 2020. The decision was taken considering the ongoing pandemic situation that disrupted the offline classes. As per the official notification, the online portal for submitting fresh applications will be open until October 15, 2020.
