Considering the issues faced by research scholars in conducting research work, teachers’ bodies and associations have urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to extend the deadline for theses submission due in March-April, by at least six months. On Monday, the UGC Chairman declared the creation of a seven-member committee to deliberate issues pertaining to examinations and academic calendar to evade any delay in the conduct of examinations and also start of academic session 2020-21. To extend the deadline by a minimum of six months, the Federation of Central Universities’ Teachers’ Association (FEDCUTA) has urged UGC Chairman D P Singh.

According to FEDCUTA president Rajib Ray from Delhi University, a number of PhD and MPhil research scholars had not been able to conduct research in this period. Apart from this, FEDCUTA secretary D K Lobiyal from Jawaharlal Nehru University addressed the issue. He informed that the absence of laboratory and library facilities (except for select few e-resources) have left scholars largely devoid of resources. They have not been able to do any fieldwork too. He wrote that presently, the crisis in the actual physical world outside has interrupted the pacific frame of mind so much required for undertaking project research work.

They urged to take cognizance of the difficult circumstances and issue instructions to universities to give a leeway of at least six months to all scholars across the country who were due to submit their thesis/dissertations or hold their pre-submission seminars.
