3 years on, No Private University submitted IoE readiness report: Education Ministry

Even after three years no private institution, which was issued the Letter of Intent (LoI) under the Institutions of Eminence, also known as IoE, have submitted their readiness report to start working as an IoE.

The IoE Scheme was launched in 2017 to grant IoE status to 10 public and 10 private universities in the country thus allowing them financial, administrative and academic autonomy. Initially, three public and three private institutions were granted the tag, which were IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IISc Bangalore in the public category, while Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal; Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and Jio Institute were awarded in the private category.

Later in 2019, more institutions were added to the list and were given letters of Intent, among the private ones were, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore; Jamia Hamdard, Delhi; Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar; O. P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat; Satya Bharti University, Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida; and Vellore Institute of Technology,

As per an answer given by the Education Ministry in Rajya Sabha, so far, 11 institutions have been notified as IoEs by the Ministry which includes eight from the public category and three from the private category.
Private institutions are required to submit their readiness reports as per the UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017.

While replying to the question on which are the institutions among these 20 institutions which have submitted readiness reports after three years of issuance of letter of intent to them, Dr Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State in the Education Ministry, “So far, no private institution, which has been issued a letter of intent under the World Class Institutions scheme, has submitted its readiness report after three
years.”

Though the Empowered Experts Committee (EEC) has approved the readiness reports of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal; Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani; O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat; Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida; Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneshwar; Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore; Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore and JIO Institute, Maharashtra.
