Admission to 3 new BTech courses at IIT Hyderabad via JEE Advanced, maximum seat capacity 10 per course
Students pursuing the new BTech degrees will be able to take up courses from all branches of sciences such as maths, physics and chemistry in the first two semesters.
Considering the current and future needs of the industry, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad has come up with three BTech programmes in Biotechnology & Bioinformatics, Computational Engineering and Industrial Chemistry, which will be starting from this academic year.
Students pursuing the new BTech degrees will be able to take up courses from all branches of sciences such as maths, physics and chemistry in the first two semesters. Not only this, they can also take up elective courses from any other department and get a minor outside the subject area by completing 12 additional credits in that area.
Talking to Shiksha, BS Murthy, Director, IIT Hyderabad, said, “We have just started three new industry-oriented BTech programmes in Computational Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics and Industrial Chemistry. BTech in Computational Engineering will be totally different from Computer Science Engineering. This is basically to prepare our engineers for various manufacturing industries. Bioinformatics is an area which is going to come up in a big way. Curriculum for BTech in biotechnology and bioinformatics is designed in such a way that the students will be trained with comprehensive bioinformatics skills such as artificial intelligence and soft computing, web technologies, structural biology, biological data mining. image processing, modeling and simulation, systems biology, and biostatistics.”
He said, “BTech in Industrial Chemistry is different from typical MSc in Chemistry. All industries, be it petrochemical industry, polymer industry or pharmaceutical industry, need chemists from engineering background. So, we want to teach students the engineering parts of chemistry so that they become ready for these kinds of industries.”
He went on to add, “Admission to all these programmes will be through JEE Advanced and the initial intake of these courses will be 10 students each. We will increase seats depending upon the interest of students. Fee structure will be same like any other BTech programme.”
